I read the first book in this series (see my review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...) and quite liked it. There was somewhat of a storyline connecting each page. It brought the popular webcomic (gronkcomic.com) into full-color print.

This time around, it feels more like a series of comics put together to form a book. As was the case in the first book, the artwork is a real stand-out. Add to that a few pop culture references and we have a book that will be pleasing to many people - adults included.

Review originally published to my blog The Leaning Tower of Tomes: https://leaningtoweroftomes.wordpress...

THE REVIEW:

Gronk: Volume 2 is the second compilation of Gronk comics, short graphic stories about the cute, little green monster, Gronk, and her new family: Dale, a nerdy human, Harli, her Newfoundland, and Kitty the cat. I recently posted my review of Volume 1, so go check that out, too.

Now, here are some thoughts I had while reading this second volume of Gronk by Katie Cook:

1) “The Cast of Gronk”: Yay, can’t wait to meet these guys again!
2) Poot. Roofus is special… Bahaha!
3) Page 11. Harli. Getting jealous, I see? Best part in the whole book!
4) The corn puns. Too funny.
5) The Dark Mark… Worm. Dying!
6) I feel like setting the coffee table on fire to make S’mores is something Calvin and Hobbes would do…
7) Only the second time in my life I have felt sympathetic toward a spider. (The first time was reading/watching Charlotte’s Web.)
8) “You’ve got 30 minutes in that chair for tweeting like a moron”. Bahaha!

Gronk: A Monster’s Story: Volume 2 is an adorable book that will make you chuckle. It’s got great nerd references and sweet, colorful illustrations. It’s charming, a lovely book to flip through when you’re looking for a smile. ♦

This second volume of Gronk comics is just as full of humor and warmth as the first. In this collection, Gronk continues to live with Dale, Kitty, and Harli and explore life in the human world. Several events were particularly funny to me. One was Gronk's reaction to Dale dog-sitting for her brother's pug. Gronk mistakes the dog for a really cute monster and has a crush on him. She acts out romantic scenes from several movies - "Titanic", "Dirty Dancing", and "Say Anything." (I'd really like to know where she comes up with all the wigs and costumes.) Another laugh-out-loud moment was when Gronk went around the house gluing googly eyes onto everything to "make new friends." My favorite was the picture of the cat's rear end with googly eyes pasted on either side of her tail. In the first book, Gronk was disappointed to find out that they had no neighbors for her to visit at Halloween. This year, Dale has decorated the house and even dressed in a Gryffindor uniform to hand out treats to Gronk, who is dressed as a Ghostbuster. They also stake out the house to try and see Santa; they sit in the car with pizza, donuts, cocoa, and binoculars and watch the chimney.

If you haven't tried out this webcomic or the earlier anthology, you really need to do so. They are suitable for all ages and have hilarious pop culture references scattered throughout the scenes.

I read an e-book provided by the publisher through NetGalley.

'Gronk volume 2' by Katie Cook collects another year in the life of the world's most unscary monster and her life with human Dale, dog Harli, and cat Kitty.

Gronk tries to get Dale to give her an iPad. There are more movie references. Gronk discovers online ordering, indoor jousting and how to get a reaction using certain bad words. Gronk tries to trap Santa and extort more candy for Halloween. Gronk gets in trouble for writing on the walls, and getting a Twitter account. Through all of it, Gronk remains as adorable as ever.

The volume ends with more tribute art by other artists. Katie's cartoons are wonderful. I love all the geek and pop culture references. I love Gronk and all her mischievous adventures. This is a fun series.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, Action Lab Entertainment, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

This volume continues where the first left off, with Gronk learning more and more about the human world. After Dale hands her an iPad, hilarity ensues as Gronk discovers online shopping, social media, cursing, and arts/crafts. And we are introduced to a very “special” pug named Roofus. As with the second half of the first volume, there isn’t a clear plot here. However, we do see evidence of time passing with references to Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. If you enjoyed the first volume, I think you will also enjoy the second.

A second collection of episodic adventures with the best friendly-critter-that's-not-really-supposed-to-look-like-Pikachu-but-does and its human companion. If you don't laugh at it sticking plastic googly eyes on to the butt of a sleeping cat to while the days away, or trying to play Wii Sports, you really are in a bad place. This book is in a fine place, and the weekly comic doesn't seem to show any slacking off after a brace of great little paper volumes to anthologise it. Almost worth 5 stars, and if some of the cultural references had travelled to me here in the UK it could well have won them.

Volume 2 of Gronk is just as funny and endearing as Volume 1. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the story of this hapless monster and her adopted family. One of my favorite aspects of the series so far is the inclusion of subtle insider references to various "adult" pop culture pieces that appear on Dale's t-shirts. I'll be looking for them in future volumes. Gronk reminds me a bit of Garfield, but without the bad attitude. This story is entirely light-hearted, but the humor still resonates throughout.

In this second volume we find Gronk still adapting to human life. Dale puts an Ipad into Gronks hands and her world is opened to endless cat videos and one click shopping on Amazon. This series is sweet and funny. Dale & Gronk move through the seasons enjoying their companionship. The pop culture refrences continue to permeate the series to my utter enjoyment! A wonderful series.

I think Gronk is now my favorite childlike monster! I still can't get enough of the nerdy references (Harry Potter! Big Bird! Star Wars!) Hilarity ensues at every turn of the page as Gronk tries to make it in a human's world. I also liked that this volume touched on Gronk's and Dale's backstories a little bit.

Gronk took two volumes to grow on me because at first I had a hard time seeing who the audience was - it seemed at times like something you could read with a five year old, but the nerdy references are clearly for my generation (or at least Wyatt's.) But it's really cute - the cat, the dog , the monster who acts like a toddler... It brought to mind Calvin and Hobbes a few times.

I really like this series. It has heart. It’s good for all ages. And Gronk is like a two year old who is really 129.

It's still tough to tell who this is for. It's pretty close to all ages, but there are a LOT of references that will go over kids' heads, and in many cases the references are what make it more than just slapstick antics. As with the first, I LOVE the artwork.

A great follow up to volume 1 with more hilarious Gronk wackiness. Every vignette managed to make me at least smile if not laugh out loud.
