The 90-second teaser trailer was unveiled to the world today and gives Star Wars fans a sneak peak at what is to come in December next year.

The clip begins in the middle of nowhere with nothing but a desert landscape in the frame.

All of a sudden, actor John Boyega pops up onto the screen and is visibly scared and appears to be under attack as the voiceover says: "There has been an awakening. Have you felt it?"

The next shot shows an army of Stormtroopers preparing for battle and exiting an aircraft, as the background music becomes more and more intense.

It then cuts to British actress Daisy Ridley - whose character's name is unknown - riding a type of speeder bike, and she too, seems scared of what is to come.

X-Wing and Tie Fighters are also shown in the trailer before the Millennium Falcon sweeps across the sky with original Star Wars theme tune playing in the background.

The teaser trailer also gives a hint of what's to come in terms of danger in the movie, as one dark character is seen brandishing a new T-shaped lightsaber.

Fans were well aware that the trailer would be dropping today as the movie's director J.J. Abrams tweeted this morning from his 'Bad Robot' account with a hand-written message for them.

It read: "A tiny peek at what we're working on - this Friday in selected theatres. Hope you enjoy, and have a most excellent Thanksgiving! Best, JJ."

Speculation surrounding the contents of the trailer began a few days ago, and people were wondering whether or not Harrison Ford would feature heavily - but he doesn't feature at all.

The upcoming blockbuster went into a filming 'hiatus' in July after Ford broke his leg on set when a hydraulic door from his character Han Solo’s spaceship the Millennium Falcon fell on him.
