The former Frasier actor became dad to son Gabriel last week, his second child with fourth wife Kayte, 34, but the birth has coincided with a painful sports injury.

Kelsey, who hurt his foot playing tennis, revealed he has had to spend much of this week hobbling around and has reportedly called in a nurse to help him in his Los Angeles home.

Speaking to talk-show host Chelsea Handler he explained: “I’m in a lot of pain. I’ve ordered a wheelchair but I have to push the baby around. I also have a two-year-old daughter Faith and she’s a little more challenging because this thing really hurts. I’ll have to put her on my lap.”

Kelsey, who also has four children from previous marriages and relationships – Spencer, 30, Greer, 22, Mason, 12, and Jude, nine, and who is also a grandfather, recently said he was keen to increase his brood.

The former Cheers actor, who played Dr Frasier Crane, added: “I may want to have a bigger family. We talk about it. I love being a dad and I have for some time now.

“This is just the next chapter of that part of my life and I’m ecstatic about it.

“The great thing about my life is I’m always prepared for surprises. I would never anticipate what it’s going to be like, easy, difficult or otherwise.

"I just take it in my stride. We’re prepared. We’re just happy about our new arrival.”
