Central Portland is booming as the housing market recovers — and in some long-established neighborhoods, the effect of infill development has been jarring.
At 1 p.m. on Monday, reporters Elliot Njus and Melissa Binder will host a live chat with two leading infill developers, Vic Remmers and Randy Sebastian. We welcome your questions.
In 2012 and 2013, flare-ups over apartment buildings built without parking packed public hearings, and the Portland City Council instated a minimum parking mandate for the largest projects.
In 2013 and 2014, a big uptick in demolitions of single-family homes to build new houses or apartment buildings caused a stir. Neighbors have clashed with developers over a lack of notice, concerns about asbestos or the potential loss of a historic home.
Tied up in these discussions are the region's push for for density, a shortage of buildable lots in the suburbs and the increasing demand for homes in its most desirable neighborhoods.
Remmers has been involved in building both apartments and single-family homes through his companies Everett Custom Homes and VWR Development.
Sebastian's Renaissance Homes was once one of the leading suburban builders in the Portland area, but now it focuses on infill houses in the city of Portland.
