Several large games I had built up excitement for, ended up slipping through the cracks, by either a general sense of “meh,” or by the game being fundamentally broken. It happened a lot. But there were also some amazing surprises–games that I had no awareness of beforehand and no real expectations for–that floored me. My list this year features a lot of games that I couldn’t have predicted loving a year ago, and very few that I could have.
