Summer's Over, Tarrytown -- How Did it Stack Up?

Here's some weather data from the Hudson Valley and beyond to give perspective on June-August.

It may come as a surprise, but this summer in the Hudson Valley temperatures overall were above average, although just barely, according to Hudson Valley Weather.

That’s because while days were cooler on average than in the past five years, nights were warmer.

“So the summer of 2014 was not all that abnormal, in terms of averages. The days were a bit cool, the nights were a bit warm, and the rainfall was about 20% below normal,” Bill Potter concluded in HVW Statistics : Summer Recap.

Overall, the Hudson Valley experienced a mild summer—specially compared to the rest of the planet. (See the graphic below)

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, “Driven largely by record warm oceans, the average global temperature for June–August 2014 was the highest on record for this period. Record warmth was particularly notable across a large swath of the Indian Ocean and parts of the western equatorial and northern Pacific Ocean.”
