Earlier this week, officials from the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns and local dignitaries held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the 40-acre site.
“The Peabody Preserve Outdoor Classroom will offer our students outdoor learning opportunities not available in most school districts,” Christopher Clouet, superintendent of schools, said in a press release. “Students, along with teachers, parents and community partners, will be co-creators of what will become a signature program for the district."
The innovative new facility is the former home of the Etruscan brick factory. Until recently, the property was largely unused with the exception of a parking lot and two athletic fields.
The outdoor classroom features ruins of the historic brick factory, views of the Hudson River, a pond, a deciduous forest, freshwater and saltwater wetlands and a variety of flora and fauna.
Visitors of all ages will check in at a kiosk, where they will each receive a trail map and student-designed educational materials.
“We started the project with two goals in mind,” said Tracy Brown, one of the classroom’s co-creators, in a news release. “One is to enhance the education of our students with hands-on, outdoor learning. The other is preserve and protect this beautiful open space and its unique habitats.”
“We believe the students will become passionate and effective stewards of this land and of the creatures who call it home.”
