Westchester County is teeming with parks that allow ice skating, cross country skiing and sledding for free during daylight hours, seven days a week.
It's important to remember that these parks don't have any rentals available, so patrons must bring their own equipment.
Those who wish to go ice skating can do so at these locations. The ice is checked daily, all you have to do is look for the “Skating Today” sign.
The list: Blue Mountain Reservation, Welcher Avenue, Peekskill; Wampus Pond, Route 128, Armonk; Mountain Lakes Park, Hawley Road, North Salem; Willson’s Woods Park, East Lincoln Avenue, Mount Vernon; and Tibbetts Brook Park, Midland Avenue, Yonkers (only when “Skating Today” sign is posted).
Weather permitting, sledding is allowed at Croton Gorge, Lasdon Park (8 a.m.-4 p.m.), Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers, Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, and Dunwoodie, Sprain Lake, Saxon Woods, Mohansic and Maple Moor golf courses.
A list of sites for cross-country skiing is available at westchestergov.com/parks, along with directions and contact information for each park.
