Why Half-Life 2 is still the greatest FPS ever made, 10 years on

A decade after Half-Life 2’s release, the masses are still obsessed with the release date/announcement/vaguest hint of existence of its currently-nebulous sequel. This is no mere case of fans chasing down leaks, scouring LinkedIn profiles, and hanging on the odd hint dropped in a developer interview. The search for Half-Life 3 is more akin to the actions of the heavily grieving bereaved. A single-minded focus on a missing loved one, leading to dreams, obsessions, and the chasing of imagined ghosts.

Its one of the greatest indeed but i myself loved Stalker just as much. That game was awesome.

ATi_Elite3449d ago

Half life 2 favorite game but the STALKER Series is my favorite series ever and omg we really need a Stalker 2.

Survarium is OK but just isn't 100% Stalker.

I think HL2 is way overrated. Nice physics and the gravity gun are the only things that stand out. The weapons are all super generic. I'm not saying it sucked but definitely not in my top 5 FPS, probably not even in the top 10.

Since it came out the same year and for comparison, I played through this game once. I played through Halo 2 a few times (don't recall the exact number) and logged 6000 multiplayer games over the course of 2 years.

Yeah, for me, HL2 doesn't even come close to how awesome Halo 2 was, let alone the entire FPS catalog.

COD4 life to date is the best shooter ever made.

DP. Sorry.

I love half-life, but Killzone cannot be touched to other shooters. Hit detection, gore, 3D, vehicles, true 7.1 digital surround sound, gameplay, graphics, story, physics, and on and on! No fps fan should miss out on the Killzone series! Throwing grenades against strong winds can almost bring them back to you! There is a developer video that came out a while ago that just showed how much tech just went into the bullets in Killzone, I think it was called "bullet time" or something, and it was very impressive.

TheFirstClassic3449d ago

@Mayberry Dude... Killzone 2 had a pretty good story, and the original was ok, but 3 was awful, and none of them were amazing. I mean, in 2, Rico got a buddy killed, his best friend died, and he killed the enemy leader because he was an emotional child, screwing them all over. And then in Killzone 3, he acts like a carefree spirit while killing the helghast, showing no guilt or pain from the previous actions he committed and events he witnessed. Makes no damn sense, he acted like such a @#$%up in 2, he should be hating himself in 3. Plus none of the characters are that interesting.

You mention vehicles, but the usage of vehicles is incredibly limited, unlike something like Halo or Battlefield. Mostly they are on rails segments, very few free movement sections across the killzone games.

I mean, the Killzone games are very impressive on a technical level, but I have no idea how anyone can say they are the best of shooters. They can't really compare to something like Half-Life 2 from a single player perspective.

I personally preferred Deus Ex more :)

lemoncake3449d ago

It's a close one, deus ex was crazy good.

Valve should give HL2 orange box a halo2 style remaster

Xb1ps43449d ago

I'll pass.. Just too many lies for me to support anything but a hl3.. No episodic content like promised no follow up dates, I'm good I don't need a remaster of it again..

Are_The_MaDNess3449d ago

its not like we already have that.......
http://cinematicmod.com/

modding for the win i guess.... why be limited in what the devs can do when we want them to work more on Dota 2 anyway.

GreetingsfromCanada3449d ago

This game is more of a myth, a legend now. It's time to stop.

I never got around to mass effect - I’m skeptical that it would hold up if I were to try it now

Furesis3d ago

I would say it does. The combat is a bit shit for todays standards but everything else is great.

It's worth a play through today.

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name45d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno45d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno45d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure45d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
