GM issues new ignition keys to eliminate shifter interference

Affected models include 2014 and 2015 full-sized pickups and SUVs

As General Motors examines the ignition switches in all the cars it makes, it has come across problems that go beyond its recent record recalls.

In a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) dated November 6, 2014, GM instructed dealer service departments to supply replacement keys to owners of certain full-sized 2014 and 2015 SUVs and pickups if they find the column shifter bumping into the key.

The problem can happen if the tilt steering column is adjusted to its highest position and a driver shifts into or out of Park. Affected vehicles include the 2014 and 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup; 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban; and the 2015 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL.

Even though contact between the shift lever and the key can rotate the key and switch the engine off, drivers have to be pressing the brake pedal to shift out of Park, so the problem is not considered safety related, GM spokesman Alan Adler said.

The new key has a shorter head with rounded corners that can't contact the shift lever. The replacement is covered under warranty, but since this is a service action and not an official recall, customers will have to pay for an updated key once their warranty expires.

If you're having this problem with your GM truck or SUV, take it to the dealership and mention TSB No. 14-00-89-005.
