Tuning, lots of cars, and retro feel are expected

A brand new and rather sketchy report has appeared online confirming that a reboot of the old Need for Speed Underground series will be announced later today, December 5, at The Game Awards, called Underground: Need for Speed, and quite a few details are available.

The Need for Speed series has gone through a rollercoaster in terms of sales and critical acclaim, as publisher Electronic Arts has tasked various studios with developing new titles in the series and hopefully get back to the position of power it held many years ago.

Last year saw the launch of Need for Speed Rivals from new studio Ghost Games, but since it didn't exactly set new records, EA decided to give the developer extra time before launching the next entry in the series.

A new game called Underground: Need for Speed is coming

Now, it seems that the upcoming title has been leaked, as a former employee of Ghost Games has taken to 4chan, via Asidcast, to claim that the next game is called Underground: Need for Speed and reboots the older NFS Underground spinoff series.

While the title aims at focusing on tuning and modifying cars, it also features elements from recent entries in the series. It also sports way more Japanese and European cars instead of American or muscle ones, to better fuel the tuning feeling.

According to the leaker, the tuning mechanics cover body kits, bumpers, spoilers, and rims, as well as vinyl and paint schemes. Players will be able to customize their cars and upload them online where they'll be rated by others.

Performance controversy is expected

While the report seems legitimate so far, the leaker also goes on to explain the performance controversy that's already happening inside the studio and at publisher EA. Apparently, there's a push to ensure that the racing experience reaches a 60fps framerate on both PS4 and Xbox One, but as a result, it's currently running at a 900p resolution on PS4 and 720p on Xbox One. Microsoft is allegedly pushing for a decrease in resolution of the PS4 build, to make it the same as the Xbox One.

The reveal is set to include a video in which a Nissan GT-R gets tuned to show off the mechanics and how the title feels.

As of yet, neither EA nor Ghost is commenting on the report, so it's unclear just what big announcement EA is bringing to The Game Awards later today or to the PlayStation Experience later this weekend.
