49ers' LB Aldon Smith won't face charges for LAX bomb threat

One legal headache for Aldon Smith appears to be over.

The San Francisco 49ers linebacker will not face charges stemming from his April arrest for making a false bomb threat at Los Angeles International Airport, Los Angeles City Attorney's Office spokesman Frank Mateljan told USA TODAY Sports by email Tuesday.

Instead, Smith will face a City Attorney Office Hearing on July 30 to discuss the matter, and the office reserves the right to file charges up to one year after the April 13 incident, though no further action is planned at this time.

"A City Attorney Office hearing is administered by members of the City Attorney's office in lieu of a criminal filing," Mateljan wrote in the email. "Involved parties are scheduled to attend and give their account of the incident. The individuals are then admonished about the applicable laws and given suggestions on how to avoid similar incidents in the future."

Smith, 24, faces a sentencing hearing July 25 — two days after the 49ers are scheduled to report for training camp —on weapons and DUI charges from two unrelated incidents.

Smith, who has 42 sacks since being picked in the first round of the 2011 draft, also missed five games last season while being treated for substance abuse.

The NFL is likely to suspend him for the start of the 2014 season.
