Games for Windows Live is getting dumped soon

Bandai Namco, the publisher of the Dark Souls franchise, confirms that the older Prepare to Die edition of Dark Souls 1 for PC is now set to make the transition from Games for Windows Live to Steam in December, not in November, as previously stated.

Dark Souls impressed millions upon millions of role-playing game fans from around the world with its challenging nature, its huge world, and its tough monsters that had to be defeated without any big mistakes.

The game first made its debut on the PS3 and Xbox 360, but after plenty of pleas from PC users, developer From Software and publisher Bandai Namco rolled out a special version of the RPG, called Dark Souls: Prepare to Die edition, onto the PC.

Unfortunately for many PC users, the game's retail copies were tied to Microsoft's clunky Games for Windows Live service in order to protect them from piracy. Seeing as how GfWL was initially rumored to go offline earlier this year, many companies started updating their old games to transition to Valve's Steam service.

Dark Souls 1 is also dumping Games for Windows Live

Bandai Namco was among them, promising that Dark Souls: Prepare to Die edition would move to Steam later this year, during the month of November. Seeing as how the month is almost over, the publisher now reveals a fresh statement, confirming that it needs a bit more time to ensure that the transition goes off without a hitch.

As such, those who own retail copies of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die edition on PC now have to wait until December.

"We are working hard to finalize the process to move your Dark Souls: Prepare to Die saves and achievements to Steam. We need to conduct additional testing and we are now targeting December to begin this process. We’ll have more information in the coming weeks. Thank you very much for your patience," the publisher mentions on the official Steam forums.

Plenty of things need to be tested

According to the company, quite a few things need to be tested before the transition takes place, as owners of the game's retail version will need to redeem their Games for Windows Live tokes on Steam to get that version of the game. What's more, the publisher hopes to ensure that existing GfWL save game files can be used by the Steam edition of the game without any major problems.

Expect to hear more from Bandai Namco in the following weeks, hopefully before the winter holidays kick off.
