Katonah's Harvey School Prepares for 'A Day of Service' on Oct. 7

The Harvey School contingent will spend the day clearing and rerouting trails, among other duties at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation.

The following release is from The Harvey School in Katonah:

More than 300 upper school students and staff will be converging on Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River Oct. 7 for the third annual “Harvey Builds: A Day of Service.” The Harvey School contingent will spend the day clearing and rerouting trails, removing invasive species along rivers, installing water bars to divert rainwater, cataloging books in the Nature Museum, planting butterfly gardens, restoring the fire rings outside the shelters and cleaning and painting the front porch of the park office.

The more than 4,000-acre reservation, designated in 2001 as a Biodiversity Reserve Area, is the largest in Westchester County, who had purchased the land in 1925 to serve as a sanctuary for wildlife and to provide recreational and educational opportunities for visitors.

Harvey’s first two years of community service days in the fall term were spent in Yonkers on neighborhood improvement projects sponsored by Westchester’s Habitat for Humanity. Dean of Students Pat Normandeau is looking forward to this year’s day of service at nearby Ward Pound Ridge. “It should be a great day and a wonderful opportunity for our students to make a difference and benefit our local community.”
