The Film Don't Lie: Eagles

A weekly look at what the Philadelphia Eagles must fix:

This week’s fix has to start with the head coach, who thinks time of possession is the least important statistic in all of sports. Chip Kelly likes to say it measures nothing more than how much time a team spends standing around in its huddle. To score points, you have to run plays. The more plays, the better.

But Kelly has to adjust his thinking on this, at least for Sunday’s game in Green Bay or it’s going to be a very long afternoon for his team. The Packers defense is ranked top-10 against the pass and in the bottom three in the NFL against the run. A slower-paced, ball-control offense would make perfect sense against that defense. Better yet, when the Eagles’ offense is on the field, Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ offense is not.

Two weeks ago in Arizona, Kelly had Nick Foles throw the ball 62 times. The Eagles lost that game, although that had more to do with a defensive breakdown than the play-calling. Last Sunday in Houston, Foles dropped back to pass 15 times in the first quarter, a pace pretty consistent with the previous game against the Cardinals. Foles was knocked out of the game on the final play of the first quarter. Mark Sanchez threw the ball 25 times the rest of the way, while running backs carried the ball more than 30 times.

That kind of balance worked very well. It will be a necessity in Lambeau Field on Sunday.
