One diver dies and two in hospital after quarry rescue

A diver has died and two others are being treated in hospital after an incident at a disused quarry in Gwynedd.

The 41-year-old got into difficulty while 40m below the surface at Dorothea Quarry in the Nantlle Valley on Sunday.

He was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital in Bangor but died, while the two divers who pulled him out were taken to a specialist unit at Wirral.

North Wales Police are investigating the incident.

Police, two helicopters and ambulances were called to the scene at 13:15 BST.

A North Wales Police statement said the two survivors were receiving de-compression treatment.

The flooded quarry in the Nantlle Valley has become a popular site with divers since it ended operations in the 1970s.

There have been about 20 deaths there since 1990.
