Lovie Smith not happy with rookie's Instagram photo

TAMPA, Fla. -- As soon as it happened, Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith let rookie tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins hear his displeasure.

Then, Smith did it a second time and the conversation focused on the use of social media.

Seferian-Jenkins posted an Instagram photo of his touchdown celebration in Sunday’s 27-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Seferian-Jenkins used the ball as a prop, placing one foot on it and posing like the Captain Morgan rum logo. That drew a 15-yard penalty, which helped give Atlanta good field position as the Falcons began a touchdown drive that put them ahead to stay.

The Instagram photo was taken down after Smith talked to Seferian-Jenkins.

"When I found out about the Instagram, I’m on Facebook a little bit so I can get pictures of my grandchild," Smith said. "Besides that, I’m not really into the rest of that stuff. Once it came to my attention, then I confronted him."

Chalk it up to youth that Seferian-Jenkins posted the Instagram photo of a moment that hurt his team badly. But Smith said he is confident Seferian-Jenkins will learn from the experience.

"It is a teaching moment for a rookie," Smith said. "With rookies, you want to have those teaching moments before something happens out there. We go over the rules. Of course, you can’t use a prop after a touchdown. When you do it in that situation, it’s just not good. Austin will tell you he’d like to have a couple plays back. He jumped offsides one time. The guy really plays hard. We’ll clean those things up."
