"This guy was on a one-man crime spree today. He has no idea of the damage he did," she said.

Jennelle Manroy, who authorities said was with Marquez during the crime spree, was also arrested.

Marquez, of Salt Lake City, is suspected in four shootings that took place Friday, including the deadly shootings of Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy Danny Oliver and Placer County Sheriff's Det. Michael David Davis Jr.

The four shootings sparked a massive manhunt by multiple agencies backed by search dogs, helicopters and armored vehicles.

Residents nearby were told to stay indoors, and schools were locked down during the search.

The owner of the home said officers used tear gas to drive the suspect from the basement.

"I think there's those people who would say, 'You know what, I wish you'd killed him,'" Placer County Sheriff Ed Bonner said at an evening news conference. "Now, that's not who we are. We are not him. We did our job."

Bonner said Friday Davis would have been 43 on Wednesday. He leaves behind a wife and four children.

The detective died 26 years to the day after his father, for whom he is named, died in the line of duty as a Riverside County deputy sheriff in Southern California.

Flags at the state Capitol were ordered flown at half-staff and Gov. Jerry Brown issued a statement extending his sympathy to the families of the slain officers.

Their "brutal murders," Brown said, "...are a tragic reminder of the sacrifices we demand of our peace officers and the incredible courage they display as they protect our communities."

The slayings of the deputies was the single deadliest day for California law enforcement since February 2013.

Jeff Davis, a 17-year veteran of the Placer County Sheriff's Department, was shot in the arm, Bonner said.

Bonner described the scene of the shootings as "incredibly chaotic" and said it will take weeks to piece together the sequence of events that led to the shootings and suspect's arrest.

The deadly chain of events began at 10:30 a.m. when Oliver and his partner went to check on a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a Motel 6 on Arden Way.

A person in the vehicle opened fire and Oliver was hit in the forehead. He later died from his wounds, Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones said during a news conference.

"He (Oliver) was not able to return fire or do anything," Jones said.

Oliver's partner was able to shoot back as the vehicle fled the scene, Jones added.

Oliver is the first Sacramento County sheriff's deputy to die in the line of duty since Nov. 12, 2008.

"To the men and women of the Sheriff's Department: We live as a family, today we will grieve as a family and tomorrow we will start healing as a family. I pray for each and every one of you that you will find the courage that I know you have," Jones said.

Deputies said Marquez and Manroy were involved in multiple carjackings in Sacramento County after the shooting on Arden Way.

During an attempted carjacking on Howe Avenue, a driver was shot five times after he refused to give his keys to the suspect.

Family members identified the driver as Anthony Holmes, 38.

He is in serious condition at UC Davis Medical Center.

Marquez and the woman were able to carjack a Mustang vehicle at Spanos Court before ditching the car and carjacking a red 2002 Ford F-150 truck at Coronado and Castec drives, authorities said.

The Ford F-150 truck was spotted by the two Placer County deputies a couple of hours later in south Auburn.

An exchange of gunfire took place and that is when both deputies were hit, sheriff's officials said.

Manroy was taken into custody not far from the scene.

She was booked into the Placer County Jail, and authorities said she had a handgun in her purse.

Marquez was able to get away and a search continued in the south Auburn area until he was apprehended at the home on Belmont Drive.

Marquez was identified by law enforcement officers as the suspect in the shooting of Oliver after he left his ID on the dashboard of one of the vehicles.

After he was apprehended, Marquez was taken to a hospital in Auburn with a gunshot to his hand.

He will then be transported to the Placer County Jail.
