The 'legend' of Mr. Game 7, Justin Williams, continues as Kings advance to Cup Final
The Los Angeles Kings became the first NHL team to win three road Game 7s en route to the Stanley Cup Final with their 5-4 overtime victory over the Chicago Blackhawks Sunday night. All three featured contributions from a man who knows a thing or two about chipping in in those moments: Justin Williams.
When the Kings completed their historic comeback in Round 1 against the San Jose Sharks, Williams assisted on what would stand as the game-winning goal during their 5-1 rout. In disposing of the Anahem Ducks in Round 2, Williams scored the opening goal on the power play and assisted on LA's final one in a 6-2 victory.
Finally, with their season on the line for a third time and a chance to play for their second Cup in three years at stake, Williams again came up big, helping erase Chicago's 2-0 lead with a goal late in the first period and later assisting on the overtime winner:
If you have one game to decide your season, you want Justin Williams on your side. He's now 7-0 in his career in Game 7s and has posted seven goals and 14 points in those games, an NHL record. But the productivity is meaningless, Williams said, if the game doesn't end with a win.
"The story is how we were able to come back and how resilient we were, how awesome this series was to play and be a part of," said Williams. "It was just fitting. It ended in Game 7 in an overtime."
