Philip Glass to score forthcoming Fantastic Four film

Ahead of 20th Century Fox’s latest superhero reboot of The Fantastic Four, director Josh Trank has confirmed that composer Philip Glass will be scoring the forthcoming film with Marco Beltrami.

Trank, best known for his 2012 film Chronicle, spoke to Collider about his long time admiration for the composer, and said that he had been working with Glass for around a year on the film after contacting his manager.

“I got his number from his manager, I sent him Chronicle and had a call with him. It was one of the coolest calls I’ve ever had in my life because he’s fucking Philip Glass and he had just watched my movie,” Trank said.

“The first words out of his mouth were, ‘I just saw your movie and it’s very philosophical.’ We were talking about the philosophy of Chronicle and it gave me goosebumps. We invited him out to set and he came to set for like three days and had a great time. He was blown away by the scale of the film. I’ve been working with him for almost a year now and he’s so inspiring. He’s such a humble, amazing guy.”

Born in Baltimore in 1937, Glass has been a prolific artist since the 1950s, for opera, dance companies and film. While he is new to the superhero franchise, his previous soundtracks have racked up a number of accolades throughout his career, with Oscar nominations for his scores for The Hours, Kundun and Notes on a Scandal. He won the Golden Globe for his 1999 soundtrack to The Truman Show.

Beltrami, however, is best known for his work scoring horror films such as Mimic, The Faculty, Resident Evil and all four Screams.

The Fantastic Four is released in the UK on 6 August (and in the US on 7 August), and stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B Jordan, Jamie Bell, and Toby Kebbell.
