Town Buys Con Ed Property, Plans Playing Fields, Highway Depot

That's the property West Point Partners wanted for its massive HVDC converter station.

Town officials will buy the property off Broadway and 11th Street on the Hudson River from Consolidated Edison, if the state Public Service Commission agrees.

The plan, according to a statement on the town website from Supervisor Linda Puglisi, is to put new, all-purpose fields on the site, keeping the “Letteri” field for youth sports.

Also the town will build a new facility for the Highway Division, moving from its current 8th Street location in Verplanck.

And finally, but not least, the town’s move will prevent the construction of the 1,000MW high-voltage direct-current converter station proposed by West Point Partners.

A town task force visited a smaller converter station on Long Island last winter; you can view their presentation to learn more.

“It would have been a huge impact to the residential area and quality of life of thousands of residents who reside in this lovely area of Cortlandt,” Puglisi wrote. “For all these reasons the Town Board and I are very pleased to tell everyone that we have won the bid to purchase this 100 acre tract of land that is on the Hudson River.”
