House of the Week: Fall asleep to the sound of a gentle stream

Onondaga, N.Y. — Katie and Brian Wallace's home on Belleflower Circle has a strong connection to the natural world, Katie said.

There are plenty of windows, and the master bedroom includes sliding glass doors. Open them at night in the summer and you can fall asleep to the sound of a babbling stream.

The house is also oriented so its windows follow the path of the sun and moon. No matter the time of day, there's always natural light flooding in somewhere.

They're selling the house now to move closer to Homer High School, where Brian works. Katie works for Idexx Laboratories, which supplies diagnostics and software for the animal health and water and milk quality markets.

They'll miss the house, Katie said.

"It's like being outside and inside at the same time," she said.

Though the home has plenty of privacy, the neighborhood is filled with great people, she added. The whole street gets together for a big Christmas party every year. Katie said she and her family will come back just for that.

The home wasn't in the best of shape when the Wallaces moved in, Katie said. They've undertaken a number of renovations since moving in five years ago.

They added a new roof three years ago and replaced the furnace in 2013. They added central air conditioning at the same time.

The kitchen has new Corian countertops, and Brian painted the home last year, including the deck and a bridge over the stream.

That bridge leads to an in-ground pool with a new liner and filter motor.

The Wallaces also spent some time on landscaping. They removed a number of pine trees from around the pool and had other trees professionally groomed. Some of the existing landscaping was a bit overgrown when they moved in, Katie said.

"It fit perfectly for us," Katie said. "It's quiet, but it's still a real neighborhood."
