"In the world of Lowside, nothing is as it seems. "

These two are too stubborn for their own good! I really enjoyed reading this - I love both Dax and Alys. But I just hope that they'll finally be able to be not only true to themselves but to each other as well. The story is interesting as always. Looking forward to seeing what happens next!

PS. Love the cover!

Civil Blood is a story which surprised me, twisted me around, showed me I don’t always know what is going to happen, and made me love it. That’s right, love it!

Okay, I realize some of you might point to my fanboy enthusiasm for all of the Echoes of the Ascended stories and imagine this is just more of that, but you’d be wrong. Sure, Best Left in the Shadows was an entertaining fantasy romp (with a definite rom-com feel to it) that I enjoyed. Yes, I do generally love everything Gelineau and King write. However, Civil Blood is special; their best outing to date, in my opinion, turning this series about Alys and Dax into one not to be missed.

As this one begins, newly appointed Justicar Dax and Lowsider Alys have established a shaky partnership of sorts; both telling themselves it is strictly business and that their past romantic relationship will not impact what could be a win-win situation for them both: the new face of the royal law in Lowside (Dax of course) gaining insight into the Lowside criminal elements while Alys gets valuable info on the goings-on of the law, which she can sell to those very same criminal elements. (Hey, I didn’t say this arrangement was logical.)

Things appear to be going fine between the two until the killings start in earnest. Nothing unusual in people dying in Lowside. It happens every day. Crime wars erupting then flaming out on their own, leaving bodies spread around like leaves after a strong windstorm. People just expect it, ignore it when it happens. But this murder spree is different; someone torturing and killing the Cinderman’s fire crews, rousing this crime boss to action! (I know, fire chief doesn’t sound scary, right? Just try to picture a corrupt fire chief who has his own private army and requires regular payments to keep random fires from destroying your property. Much scarier now.)

Quickly, the news of the murders finds its way to Alys’ ears. A mutilated man having returned to the Cinderman and pointed his remaining fingers squarely at Alys as his torturer. The enraged crime boss letting it be known he is coming for Alys’ blood!

Well, all this surprises Alys. I mean, she knows she didn’t do these murders, so it begs the question “Who is trying to frame her for them?” What bothers Alys the most is she doesn’t know the answer to the question, and she always knows. It is her business to know everything of importance which happens in Lowside. And so she sets out to uncover the identity of this person quickly, because no one fucks with her. No one!

Meanwhile, Justicar Dax finds himself in a different type of trouble. Family trouble. Specifically, a friendly visit to the palace to visit his older brother, Marek, turning into a sibling inquisition.

Naturally, Alys is a big part of Marek’s obvious concern for Dax. The older brother trying to gently remind Dax of what Alys did to him before and what she tried to do to their father. Marek carefully warning that she is even more dangerous now, not to be trusted at all, because she is a part of the violent, corrupt, and treacherous world of Lowside; her loyalty more to Pious Black (criminal overlord of the city) than to any friend, even if Dax’s idealistic view of life and Alys wishes it was different. And to show his worry is real, Marek even offers a contingent of bodyguards to guard his little brother — though Dax refuses, declaring that he has everything under control; everything is strictly business.

Once returned to Lowside though, Alys quickly asks Dax to help her deal with her personal problem with the Cinderman and get to the bottom of who is framing her. Why she wants or needs Dax’s help for her plan isn’t clear. His position as Justicar not seeming to help her at all in this endeavor. But the rather star-struck (Dax has it bad for her, even if he tries to hide it.) Justicar doesn’t ask any questions, just heads off into the unknown to help a woman he might not be able to trust completely.

What follows is a lightning quick story of criminal confrontations, old feelings, and rousing fights, which never slows down and never stops surprising. The masterful glimpses of this couples history and their current feelings toward each other and their world transforming what appeared, at first glance, to be a simple rekindling of a forbidden relationship into a complex narrative filled with treachery and dark motives. Each side of this partnership unsure of the other, dealing with remorse about the past, but filled with deep conviction, ready and willing to die in their own personal crusades.

Wow! That was my feelings when I finished this second installment of the Best Left in the Shadows series. My mind trying to come to grips with the noir-like atmosphere, the growing webs of lies and secret choices, the treachery which simmers just beneath the surface, and the growing understanding that Gelineau and King have so much more to reveal before this mesmerizing tale is done.

The only thing which sucks about Civil Blood is that I have to wait months for the next volume of this tale, which pains me almost as bad as having to wait however many more years before George R.R. Martin finishes The Winds of Winter.

I received this book from the authors and Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. I’d like to thank both of them for allowing me to receive this review copy and inform everyone that the review you have read is my opinion alone.

Someone is attacking one of Pious Black's Captains and setting up Alys in the process.

Civil Blood like it's predecessor Best Left in the Shadows is a mystery. Someone is setting Alys up and of course she won't tolerate such foolishness. Who could it be and what does this individual want? Oh Alys will find out.

Civil Blood delves into what led to the rift between Alys and Dax. I have to imagine if they each were honest with one another it would change things, but they each hold back which appears likely to lead to misery. That being said their relationship seemed much better in Civil Blood than it did in the duos previous novella.

The hints of the largely story of Echoes of the Ascended are driving me nuts. I really wish the authors chose a more fleshed out format than novellas. There is so much I need to know, but the novellas stick to their single story more than anything.

Civil Blood was a solid mystery and addition to the larger Echoes of the Ascended series.

Howdy everyone,

Joe and I are back with another trip into Lowside.

Civil Blood is novella #2 of Best Left in the Shadows. It ups the stakes for Alys and Dax as they’re on the hunt once again together. We explore more of the two worlds that tore them apart, while also digging deeper into their past. We’ve got some new and familiar faces among the shade folk. And there are plenty of new twists and fun to be had.

The series Best Left in the Shadows follows Alys, our tough, streetwise, quick-witted, and quick-tongued thief and assassin. She’s paired with Daxton Ellis, a nobleman and justicar. They once were lovers. It cost them dearly and they separated, but now they are brought back together again.

They’re not ready to fall in love again, but not willing to be separated again either, even as their two worlds pull them apart.

The world of Lowside, and all of the capital city Resa, is a deep, complicated place, and our two protagonists are caught in the middle. It’s our version of a bloodier, bigger Romeo and Juliet in a fantasy, crime noir setting.

The complete story is told through a series of novellas. Think of it like your favorite episode-based TV show. Each novella can stand on its own, but when read together, it tells the fuller story.

Best Left in the Shadows is one of the four series in Echoes of the Ascended.

Echoes of the Ascended is a series of series.

It follows the lives of five orphans. Each series features different characters. Each is a different kind of tale.

Read one, two, three, or all the series to customize your own unique, personal experience into the grander story of Aedaron.

We hope you enjoy Civil Blood and all the rest of the Echoes of the Ascended novellas. We'd love to hear your thoughts, so please check us out at www.gelineauandking.com

The setting is interesting, the world is interesting and the story has potential. Sadly the characters are the weak link. They seem like they could be interesting, we get glimpses but so much is obscure that it's simply getting just frustrating. I understand that this was intentional but the knowledge that it'll take a year or more till we get a clear picture... oh boy.

But the writing is excellent, fast and fluid and is a joy to read so i'll keep up.

5 Words: Crime, betrayal, loyalty, friendship, war.

Damn. I need more. I need more so bad.

I am addicted. I need it all, I need it now. I cannot get over how well this series is written, how each of the series-within-a-series in Echoes of the Ascended has a different tone, a different feel to the writing, completely different characters.

I really want to find out more about Briar and Alys. There's a twist in this installment and I just can't figure out who is telling the truth, and I won't stop reading until I do.

And Pious Black?!?! What?!?!

After the first round of The Echoes of the Ascended, Best Left in the Shadows was my favorite of the four storylines. Therefore I was eagerly awaiting Civil Blood because I was really looking forward to continuing the story of Alys and Dax.

I was not disappointed! This proved to be a very interesting and nice short story. It was very nice to see the links with the other stories. I liked it a lot, to be honest. Looking forward to read more of the series!

This is the second story and follows Dax and Alys as they work to figure out what is behind certain crimes in the slums where Alys lives. They both love each other, but are not exactly on the same side and don't quite trust each other so aren't willing to act on their feelings. In this story we learn about the circumstances that tore them apart, as well as secrets each is keeping from the other. I was disappointed that Dax, who is so bright and good, is used to such a degree by others. And that he isn't better able to position himself to ensure he has some control over events when everything comes to a head.

This story brings in some larger intrigue and I'm interested, though anxious, to see how things progress. This is a dark world, but the characters have humor and the tone of writing is fairly light. It's right up my alley.

Mark Gelineau and Joe King have done it again! Civil Blood is full of all the atmosphere and charm of a Victorian Murder Mystery, but with a dirtier and darker feel. In this sequel to Best Left in the Shadows, we return to the streets of Lowside and back into the company of Alys and Daxton.

This time Alys is asking Daxton for help because someone has been running a muck in Lowside, killing gang members and setting fires, all whilst impersonating Alys. Alys and Daxton must find out who has been causing all this trouble, before someone else retaliates and takes Alys out!

I find this miniseries, a lot slower than the other three. It lacks the thrilling and horrifying, paranormal aspects of Rend the Dark, and the majestic battle scenes of A Reaper of Stone, instead favoring to concentrates on the relationships between people. There is such a complex web of deceit and lies behind Civil Blood that I feel we've only really scratched the surface so far. The sheer amount of manipulation going on is mind blowing! Daxton and Alys want to trust each other but can't quite make that final jump... and who can blame them when there are so many secrets between them.

This was the first time I have read one of Mark Gelineau and Joe King's books and felt that it didn't quite appease my appetite for their wonderful storytelling. I feel it necessary to point out, at this point, that this was my least favourite story-line out of the four, and this may be at the root of my complaint, but for me, Civil Blood felt like an in-between book, a bridge between the initial action of Best Left in the Shadows and what is to come. Its so heavy with the development of new characters and the history that separates Alys and Daxton that I felt, very little progress was made and that left me feeling a little underwhelmed.

There was still plenty of things I did enjoy, such as the sparks that fly between Daxton and Alys. There is still a lot of witty banter being thrown back and forth between these two, as they fight their attraction to each other. They have developed a little more trust, but as I've said already, they're still holding their cards close to their chests. The other thing I love about this series is the atmosphere. It's hard to capture so much in so fewer pages but somehow Gelineau and King always seem to deliver the most amazing sense of place. I could imagine ever corner, ever turn, basically every aspect of Lowside thanks to their descriptive abilities.

All in all this wasn't what I wanted it to be, but it's the building blocks towards something bigger... I can feel it! I will just have to learn to be more patient and enjoy the slow unveil.

Review

'Civil Blood' is the second novella in the 'Best Left in the Shadows' series and one that I loved due to the return of my favourite characters: Alys and Dax. The chemistry between these two was spectacular in the previous novella 'Best Left in the Shadows' and I couldn't wait to see how it would evolve.
Alys still remains one of my favourite female protagonists. She is strong and capable, smart and witty. But best of all? She is a badass. I loved that about her. How she wasn't afraid to pick up her knives and fight and she wasn't afraid to stare death in the face and spit in it, too. Who wouldn't fall in love with a character like that?
The characters that filled this novella ALL added their unique qualities to the story and made the plot so much better. I loved how well each and every one is developed with traits that made them unbelievably realistic. I felt like I could reach out and touch whomever I met; like I was passing them on the street and they were right in front of me.
'Civil Blood' was full of...well...blood. But it was also jam packed with adventure, fighting and crimes that made reading it a great deal of fun. The world of Lowside was delicately yet masterfully painted with brothels, run-down houses, brawls and mysterious crime lords. It really was one of a kind!
As always, beautiful storytelling that captured me from the first word. I greatly admire the skill Mark Gelineau and Joe King have with their writing. It rivals that of the best authors I know! They use plenty of imagery language that makes reading their novellas a pleasure to read and absolutely, inexplicable enchanting. And of course, I couldn't spot any typos or spelling mistakes. Grammar and prose? Done to perfection!
What continues to fascinate me is the planning that has gone into each novella. The detailing of very sentence, actions and thoughts the characters made was just...awesome! I really have no words to describe how GREAT these novellas are! And that ending! THAT ENDING! No words. I. HAVE. DIED. And gone to heaven, of course!
Congratulations to Mark Gelineau and Joe King on publishing the second novella in the 'Best Left in the Shadows' series! Can't wait for the third!

Rating Plan
1 star : Strongly did not like the book, writing and plot was bad. Idea of the book was against my liking.
2 star : Didn't like it, didn't find it interesting or gripping. Seemed to drag on to me.
3 star : An average book. Wasn't bad or good. Everything else was well done. Original idea.
4 star : Like a 3 star but has potential to it as a series or the book grew on me as it progressed and certain scenes captured me. I Enjoyed it and read it in one sitting.
5 star : I LOVED IT! I stayed up late until 3 am. Author is a genius, characters, plot, idea, development, EVERYTHING was EXCELLENT. Nothing else can possibly be said except that its 5 STAR!

It feels like forever since I've read a Gelineau and King mini novel so what better way to break the fast than with my second favourite storyline out of the four?

When last we left our heroes, they were renewing their acquaintance after a failed romance. Nothing exciting there, you may think, however this extract of their story proves that it's all far more complex than we ever realised. It also begins to show a bit more of a connection to the other stories. No mention of any of the other characters, but Artifacts and Ruins are dropped into conversations.

Dax and Alys are trying to find their equilibrium with each other again, not to restart their romance, but perhaps to forge a friendship, but it will never work if neither of them are honest with the other. They seem to have opened themselves up to the hurt already, but not the honesty, which is going to make for interesting times. Strangely I'm ok with that, I'm perhaps more focused on the great big hidden mystery going on. What happened?! Also, more to the point, WHEN?! This is a very important point, because I feel it will set the tone for all of their history. Before the orphanage? Before they met? During their romance? I'm pretty sure that it wasn't after...or am I wrong?

It seems as though Dax is convinced that he has more need for Alys than she does for him, so when she turns up seeking his help, he's pretty surprised! Of course nothing is ever straight forward with these two and unfortunately they seem to be caught in the centre of other peoples plots. We sort of know who the key players are, but both of them remain a complete mystery and clearly nothing is as it seems, I mean the blurb told us so! I'm interested in finding out which side is actually which, because see the second part of the previous sentence...

I'm hoping these guys survive the oncoming storm and perhaps make a side of their own. They're being pitted against each other and if everyone else had their way they'd probably destroy each other two. But Dax's family seems important, so I'm wondering if Alys's is too. Are they the key points in this story, or is what they uncover what we're meant to focus on?
Only one way to find out.
NEXT!

I received a free copy of this book (an ARC) in exchange for my unbiased review. The opinions stated are solely my own.
Civil Blood is part two in the story of Daxs and Alys. Trouble has come for Alys and it is a remnant from her past. A former member that she used to know has resurfaced after all this time and is looking to stir things up with one intention: Get to Pious Black…and kill him. Pious Black is the man who runs Lowside and when one of his captains has something stolen from him…well, the man knows that his life is now forfeit for flinching after being baited. Dax gets pulled in as the Justice of the area of Lowside now but his brother looks to try and protect him from what is coming by testing him and see if he can be brought in on what is going on down there.
Nothing is what it seems in Lowside…or on Highside either…no one’s hands are as clean as they pretend to be. Gelineau and King raise a lot of questions with this book and of course leave us with a cliffhanger as characters are revealed in mysterious ways. They so expertly lead us one way and let our minds start thinking…okay…what if THIS character is actually Pious Black? Only to discover that they aren’t….leaving us to think and say…”Well played sirs…well played.” The saying in Lowside is is that if you go looking for the truth it will get you killed. One of my favorite lines was about the spiders and the flies but when they threw in the added twist…owls. While the spiders and flies are playing their games and eating the owls are waiting to devour all. It’s so true and just engages you more as you read on to find out…who is what and who will make it to the end?
There are so many twists and turns, shifts and changes…you honestly wonder…what is the ultimate game with these characters? Who is truly loyal and who is just there until a better opportunity presents itself? Down in Lowside…you always have to be on your guard and the same is true with Civil Blood. We even get teased with a hint at Kay from Faith and Moonlight when she is mentioned briefly which immediately caught my attention and made me want to know more. (Well played gentlemen…well played. LOL)
What can I say? Gelineau and King have done it again. They sucked me into another good book and they left me more than ready for book 3. I will be impatiently waiting for their next book in this series as I know that it will only get better and better. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. Definitely something that everyone who loves fantasy should be checking out. I will be purchasing these stories and be reading them over and over again. They are truly engaging.

Original Review Here

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The second novella in the Best Left in Shadows series, Civil Blood was an action packed story, complete with violence, love and sacrifice. Mark Gelineau and Joe King know how to fill a novella to the extreme, creating a believable world full of heroes and villains and those who fall somewhere in-between.

Alys has been framed, and she needs Dax’s help to get to the truth. At least, that is what she tells him, when really she just needs him to be present to get what she wants. Dax is conflicted, knowing how dangerous Lowside is but adamant he is going to make a difference. When he recognises the person framing Alys, he knows he has stumbled upon a much bigger plot: an attempt to take down the notorious crime-lord who runs Lowside.

Having been introduced to the characters in the first novel, I was excited to see them again. Dax is naïve, innocent and determined to do the right thing. He has a confidence and determination though – he isn’t as helpless as Alys makes out. Nor is she as rough as she likes others to believe, still holding a soft spot for her former lover. Their conflicting personalities – both with each other and with themselves – makes for interesting reading.

For a short novel, Civil Blood is packed with action and tension. From taking on the fire crews to meeting Pious Black himself, there is no shortage of violence. Thankfully, despite Alys running around with a scythe strapped to her back, nothing is too explicit. Just the right level of blood to be believable in a town such as Lowside.

I have really become gripped by all of the worlds Gelineua and King create in their novellas, but this is my favourite. A rough area with a man of justice trying to make a difference while falling for a local girl. It has everything you could want from a short story. If I was ever going to write novellas, this series would be the perfect guide.

If you want something short but powerful to read, Civil Blood is the perfect combination. I’m looking forward to reading more from them.

Here we find ourselves back in the company of Alys and Dax; two very different characters who have a complicated history with each other. Dax is a ‘Highside’ born noble and Alys is a ‘Lowside’ born gang member. Here they are, again, thrown together and need to investigate some Lowside killings, the only witnesses identify Alys as being the perpetrator!
This short story follows the investigation of the killings detailed above; Alys and Dax’ both have their own reasons for undertaking this investigation but both want to know who is killing people, and why.
What I really like about his book is the way that we delve further into the characters’ respective histories. It adds more depth to them and we can really begin to see why they make certain decisions. Also, we get to see what the relationship is between the two main characters and how it has been formed and this is done really well, with only snippets of information and that really whets your appetite.
The Lowside world of Aedaron is absolutely fantastic and there are shady characters around every corner, each one as interesting as the next. Even the feel of the place is detailed brilliantly and, as a reader, you really start to imagine what it would be like to live in this world; scary, unforgiving and not for the faint hearted!
Pious Black is a very interesting character and is revealed with exceptional elegance in this story – I can’t say any more as I don’t want to spoil it!
The action in this short story is just fantastic, it moves with a quick, fluid pace and details every punch, kick and thrust of sword/scythe. Just brilliant.
As with every short story written by Mark Gelineau and Joe King, I just wish it was longer! I could read these for days on end and not be bored.

In Civil Blood, Alys enlists the help of Dax, her “old friend” and new Justicar of Lowside, when she’s accused of gruesome killings in Lowside. Though he is unsure how he can be helpful since Lowside has its own rules, Dax can’t help but go along even when he’s dealing with a few secret things of his own, problems that has to do with his family. As they try to get to the bottom of Alys’s problem, their loyalty and trust in trust in each other – or lack thereof – are put into question as things become more complicated than ever.

Like the first book in the series, this was a really good read. It’s a great follow-up to Best Left In The Shadows. The interesting dynamic between Alys and Dax is still there and it continues to make things exciting. Some details about their past are revealed so we also begin to understand more about their relationship and why they are who they are. This book is also big on mystery and there are a few great twists that make things even more intriguing and exciting. I kind of guessed the ultimate reveal at the ending but it’s such a great twist that I can’t wait to find out more in the next book!

Justicar Daxton Ellis wants to bring the king's justice to Lowside. The Chancellor and the First Shield - Dax's father and brother - are determined to bring Lowside's crime kingpin, Pious Black, to heel. Once again, Dax is going to have to choose between his family and his loyalty to his former lover Alys - but when nobody is telling him the truth, how can he decide?

We may mostly see the action through Dax's eyes, but this is Alys's Echo and she dominates it from start to finish. Increasingly ambiguous, outrageously capable, she's a joy to watch whether she's cutting men up with her scythe or her snark. As we learn more about her history with Dax - and crucially, how their affair ended - it's ever more evident that nothing and nobody in Lowside is ever what they seem.

Civil Blood picks up where Best Left in Shadows left off, and lifts this Echo of the Ascended to the next level. It's gripping stuff, and as Gelineau & King gain confidence and experience, it's turning into a hell of a ride. You don't -have- to have read Best Left in Shadows to enjoy Civil Blood - but you're going to want to pick up the sequel. Fast.

I received a free copy of this book from Gelineau and King through NetGalley.
The second installment in Dax and Alys’ world is just as dark, thrilling and filled with the evocativeness that characterizes anything written by this duo.
In Civil Blood, Dax is the face of the King’s law in Lowside and Alys is being framed for a spate of murders involving the Cinderman and his ilk. So of course Alys enlists Dax to help her.
Now I love strong, smart, independent female protagonists and Alys is just that badass. In fact, I’ve always felt a little bit bad for Dax, I mean how can he keep up with her right? But in this book we get a little of that back story between the two of them, and it is just as twisted as you should assume. The relationship between Dax and Alys is also done just right, and the sexual tension is delicious as always. Throw in a couple of twists that may or may not blindside you, but will definitely keep you engrossed in the book and you have another winner.
Everything I adore in anything written by Gelineau & King is present in this book as all that have preceded it. From the well painted imagery, to the well done characterizations and a plot line littered with twists, this is not a book that will disappoint.

One city, two worlds.
The King of Aedaron reigns in splendor, while far below in the streets and alleys of the underworld a different kind of king emerges. Alys and Dax have always been caught in the middle. Once they fought for love, and their worlds tore them apart. But now as they are forced back together they must choose whether to fight again.
But for what? And against whom?
In the world of Lowside, nothing is as it seems. Even each other.

This is the second story in the Best left in the Shadows series and you will need to read them in order. Another short story (80 pages) just like the first story which is not the type of length I prefer. I awarded Civil Blood a fair three stars due to the length again and I personally do not think this is my kind of story as I wasn't hooked. However, it is well written, contains short chapters, easy to read and set out well with a gorgeous cover! This would make an ideal story for readers who enjoy young adult, mystery and fantasy. It's a shame it was not to my taste, but each reader is different! This series has not put me off the author, I just hope their other stories grab my attention more.

'Civil Blood' by Mark Gelineau and Joe King is book 2 of Best Left In Shadows and another in their series of novellas in the world of Aedaron.

Last time around, Dax was investigating a missing girl in Lowside with the help of Alys. They had an interesting chemistry together, he of royal blood, she of street smarts. This time around Alys has been accused of murdering Cinderman's people and Dax has to wrestle with the things he feels for her. Alys and Dax find themselves at odds with each other and in the kind of danger that finds them face to face with Cinderman. Can they survive the night and each other?

I think I liked the first book a bit more. It was a bit more procedural in nature. This time around the story is a bit less precise, but that doesn't mean I didn't like it. I've enjoyed all the books in this Echoes of the Ascended series. They are short, well-plotted reads and feature interesting main and supporting characters.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Gelineau and King, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

I have qualms about giving 5 stars. I like all the Echoes books', but this mini-series is, by far, the best. Once again, I am surprised at the level of detail in such a short read.

The relationship between Alys and Dax forms a brilliant cornerstone to a incredibly entertaining story. And a few flashbacks reveal a little of how things ended between them, giving the reader a greater understanding of their complex and tense affiliation.

Personally, I would love then even more if they were longer, but that's just my obsessive brain. Also, I really hate the cover. Alys has too much of a 'I need saving' look as opposed to a 'get too close and I'll kick your ass' look. I'm not a fan of faces on covers anyway so this one is not for me. Still 5 stars though, it's that good.

Another stunning piece of novella fiction from Gelineau and King. The twists are numerous and the unrequited love tragic, you will never be bored.

Review to come!

UPDATE:

Another stunning piece of novella fiction from Gelineau and King. The twists are numerous and the unrequited love tragic, you will never be bored.

Alys and Dax have to work together regularly now that he is working as the judicar of her area. When she is falsely accused of a horrific crime against her "company", will they be able to put their personal feelings aside to solve the crime and still remain true to themselves?

I love the Echoes of the Ascended world, but this series is not my favorite of them all. Not that it isn't awesome, but the unrequited love plot is annoying, and the politics are deeper than the novella expands upon. I simultaneously want more but don't want to delve deeper for fear of getting frustrated.

Still interesting to see how Alys and Dax dance around their obvious love for one another. There are some minor surprises here. We get some answers about what happened to Alys and why "Alys and Dax," as a couple, makes for such a complicated proposition.

I still worry that the short format of these tales is leaving some world-building and ambiance on the cutting room floor. But this may just betray my preference for long, epic fiction or literary short fiction.

This novella was definitely an improvement from Best Left in the Shadows. There was still a slight lack of world building and although we are given a glimpse into Dax and Aly's past, I still wanted a bit more about them and what had happened. I loved the new characters and there were much better twists to the plot this time around. Much improvement on the part of the authors, just to hope to see more chemistry and even grittier fight scenes next time that fit the intensity of the series.

Gelinaeu and King take readers once more to Lowside, where the gritty underbelly of Resa has been cast into a state of upheavel when someone frames Alys to gain favor in the criminal underground. True to form, the second installment of the Best Left in the Shadows series brings to life the best and worst of its characters in a nonstop adventure of action and subterfuge. Kudos, Gentlemen! You did it again!

I received a copy of this book in response for an honest review

When I read the first book in this series (which is interconnected with the other novels) I fell in love with the characters. They are the kind of characters that you can really get connected to and you want them to succeed.
This book does not disappoint and continues to bring new aspects of the world, and the characters, to life.

Another solid book for this series. I can't decide which heroine I like better - Elinor or Alys, but either way, wonderfully written, wonderfully captivating, and it was lovely to see more of Alys' and Dax's world. I fun to read that doesn't have as much gore as some of the other books (if that's an issue for you). I would recommend this book. 5 out of 5 stars. Brilliant.

Gelineau and King are the Best!
This fantasy story of two star-crossed lovers, Dax and Alys, that flip your usual concept of romance and love. In this installment, there is a conspiracy against Alys that will test the loyalty of Dax, both to the Crown and his family and to her.
Note: I received a copy from Netgalley for review purposes.

No tengo palabras.
