Too be honest I was disappointed with this comic. I enjoyed Jonathan Maberry's Benny Imura series, but this new work was bland. The plot just seemed ridiculous, everything about this book was so unbelievable and the plot twists were very predictable. Unfortunately I don't have anything positive to say about this. It wasn't terrible but I would not recommend this. 2/5

First, I should probably give the disclaimer that I am a Jonathan Maberry fangirl. He hooked me in with Rot & Ruin and it's been an amazing journey through each story.

V-Wars is no different. A solid storyline, dialog, and artwork. This is a great first volume that sets the plot and leaves you wanting more. Definitely looking forward to seeing where he takes us.

Chills. I got chills when reading the story. WOW!

The situation Jonathan Maberry portrays in V-Wars Vol. 1 Crimson Queen is thrilling and complex. Imagine the following situation: In a near future some humans have transformed into vampires thanks to an inexplicable gene mutation, therefore now there are two species walking the earth, humans and blood. Although at the moment being human is status quo the vampire population has become target for discrimination. And so the V-Wars began.

Maberry tells the story in a polyphonic way as there are different points of view on each side. No everyone wants a war, not every one wants peace, but still the violence and loses on both sides are considerable.

Reading this was a thrilling experience. Accompanied with beautiful illustrations, the story is deep. The different levels that appear keep you guessing on the plausible end game, but nothing is just as simple as black and white.

Personally I can't wait for vol.2

(I received a free copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.)

Jonathan Maberry, author of the Joe Ledger series of novels (and many others) has written a graphic novel for all fans of horror - humans vs vampires. It tells the story from the beginning of the Vampire Wars: the gene mutations that created the vampires, the first shots in the war between them and the situation that develops from there.

Horror is one of the best genres for graphic novels - the imagery does suit the style quite well and Jonathan Maberry makes full use of it in this book. The storyline itself is very good - solid, unflinching plot that gives the idea that not all vampires are horrible, nasty creatures and that not all humans are peace-loving either.

The artwork is stunning at times. The story encompasses war and violence and the art reflects that: not always real crisp and clean lines, but choppy, rough and always letting the reader build on the sense of the story with illustrations.

I really enjoyed this volume and will wait with anticipation to read the next one.

The truth is that I am not the target audience for this format. But, I love Jonathan Maberry and can't resist anything with his name attached.

This graphic novel tells us the story of the beginning of the Vampire Wars. Humans and Vamps can't live together peacefully and mayhem ensues.

As always the story is captivating. One of Maberry's strengths is writing well-rounded characters. Some of them just happen to be zombies or vampires. They are good, bad, confused, frustrated, angry, violent, loving. In other words, they are realistic and relatable.

For fans of well-written and thought-provoking horror, Jonathan Maberry should be at the top of your list. And, if you can allow your mind to be open to a graphic novel, then this one is a no-brainer.

4/5 stars. Thank you to the publisher for providing an e-copy through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This issue is the one that gets the story in full motion. We already met Luther Swann in issue #0 (The Free Comic Book Day Issue). Issue #1 gives you a little background on exactly who Luther is and his own personal experience with the virus. Not only is he a writer and all knowing vampire expert, but the virus that is turning people into vampires has hit his whole family excluding him. Because of his expertise and experience the government turns to him for help. Luther does not think a war is necessary. He meets Speaker of The House Conrad Holly who shares his exact views and beliefs. Conrad Holly wants to propose a peace treaty between both sides. Luther feels optimistic for the first time in a long time; But then tragedy strikes and the war starts up again in full swing... as far as anyone can tell there is no end in sight, and the body count is rising.

This was a great beginning to a great series. It begins by tugging at your heart strings and then escalates to complete and utter chaos. A monumental war with no solution. Amazing art accompanied by an even more amazing tale. This comic will leave you wanting more. I would definitely recommend picking up Maberry's V-Wars. Five Stars.

Another fantastic Maberry! Obviously, I might be a bit biased since I've been a fan of his for years, but I really enjoyed this story. I loved the concept behind these vampires and how society and our cultures would realistically view them, if something like this happened.

It's not good. Could it ever have happened any other way?

I'm absolutely looking forward to the show on Netflix and will definitely be reading more of these stories (especially since I've hear a Mr. Joseph Edwin Ledger makes an appearance).

"V-Wars" has the feeling of a story that is a hybrid of the comic "DMZ" and the book "The Strain". I always appreciate a good vampire story. This was an interesting take.

The Ice virus, released from melting glaciers, unlocks dormant DNA in humanity. This gene turns people into vampires. Obviously, this is going to cause a problem. Though, not all the vampires are blood sucking killers there are some that hold with the legend. Humanity is no angelic species either, as the new paradigm unleashes all that is bad in humanity. It has descended into a shooting war between humans and vampires and both sides commit atrocities.

In the midst of this we have a folklore specialist who is embedded with a Special Forces team and a journalist trying to report on the Vampire side of things. There is a lot going on here. Who really started these events? Who wants the war to continue? Who is the Crimson Queen? All of these are important questions. The plot attempts to show the conflict through the lens of vampires and humans. It's not bad and entertained me. I am interested to see where this story goes and may gravitate towards the novels at some point. Shame the artwork wasn't better, at best it's "decent".

A good selection for vampire lovers, or people who enjoy an odd social commentary with vampires as the "other".

I won a Goodreads Firstreads giveaway and received the six individual issues of the comics which will comprise the eventual trade version of this book. It's a companion piece to the Maberry-edited and created shared world prose anthology V-Wars from the same publisher; sort of an illustrated and expanded version of some of the events from that book. The concept is similar to George R.R. Martin's Wild Cards series; here, an ancient virus is released by melting polar ice that kick- starts junk DNA in some people and causes them to mutate into vampires. It's all written very deftly, and Maberry has certainly does his research into various historical versions of monsters. The art is mostly pretty good, not great, and there are some nice excerpts from the prose volume included. The story is very interesting, with an unusual depth of character; I was quite surprised with the reveal at the very end, though in retrospect it made perfect sense. All hail The Crimson Queen! I hope to read many further volumes in both versions of the series.

Vampires versus humans--a war that starts and appears to be one that will last forever. There is one man that attempts to stop the fighting but neither vampire or humans appear to be interested. A knock on the door brings this one man to the crimson queen. Will he survive this visit? Will the crimson queen kill him?

I love this graphic novel!! It is fantastic! The color illustrations and drawings themselves are excellent. It has a great plot. I like how the vampires were "created." I look forward to reading all the volumes! You won't be disappointed if you want a different vampire story.

Thank you to Net Galley and IDW for an e-arc of this book. This is fantastic! Imagine our world, where humanity grapples with it's current racial, political, ethnic, and religious turmoil, and then draw a genetic line with a species of humans turned vampire on the other side. It's not going to be pretty. Militants, extremists, pacifists exist within both species, but there are more powerful entities pulling the strings, orchestrating the war, and shaping public opinion operating behind the scenes. This violent, tightly-written, layered work is another example of Maberry's genius. He has taken monsters that popular culture is tired of, and brought them back to terrifying life! This makes me look forward to the comic book adaptation of his wonderful Rot & Ruin series even more!

I was given the set of Comics that comprise the volume as part of the first reads program and I have to say I really enjoyed them. The story reads like classic Claremont from the 80's X-Men, with Vampires instead of Mutants, and is full of prejudice and hate and being caught on the wrong side of genetics while the art is like 90s Steve Dillon from his Preacher and Punisher runs. Thoroughly enjoyable!

This is an original story based on the V-Wars novels.
Jonathan Maberry puts an interesting spin on traditional vampire stories. Global warming releases an arctic virus that activates dormant genes in humans, transforming them into mutations with vampiric properties.
Some exhibit very subtle changes and could pass as humans. Others grow pointed bat-like ears, sprout wings, or take on monstrous characteristics. Some of the transformed are not blood-driven and find ways to suppress their urges while others act like normal blood-sucking vampires. Some wish to blend into society while others want their kind to rise to the forefront and abolish all inferiors. Only a minority of these new vampires are hostile and dangerous.
However, the fear of the unknown and different results in society and governments branding them all as a threat and soon war between humans and vampires breaks out. While hate groups spread on both sides of the issue there are also forces on both sides that wish to find compatibility and peace.
One of the main characters is a professor considered an expert in vampire mythology and folklore who is recruited to accompany a government strike force team as a reluctant advisor. Another key character is a female news reporter privileged to get an inside look at vampire culture in hopes of more objective reporting. A congressman has the answer to peaceful coexistence but his message is suppressed and canceled out early.
Politics on both sides rears its ugly head and clouds the issues even further. Manipulation. Conspiracies. Splinter groups with cross purposes. Misunderstanding and prejudice. Hatred. It's all here in a fast-paced adventure that doesn't conclude but ends at an appropriate point. I'll need to find Volume 2 as well as the prose novels. Good reading ahead.
The art and color work is exceptional, brutally graphic in many places. The facial expressions exhibit a broad range of emotions quite effectively and help to emphasize the direness of the situation.
There are so many parallels to the current debate over immigration that our federal representatives could benefit from reading this. Maberry has a way of presenting opposing points of view with objectivity, empathy and fairness. This should be required bedtime reading for DJT.

I'm a big fan of Maberry, specifically his Pine Deep Trilogy which I consider to be some of the best horror novels of all time. This wasn't quite at that level, but was interesting.

Vampirism in this series is looked at as a disease. Vampires are used in this series as an allegory to examine racism, xenophobia, etc. This is part horror, part political thriller. I prefer more traditional vampire tales, but at least this is something different. I think it's a little wordy, but considering Maberry is more a prose writer, that only makes sense.

Another vampire series.  Just when you thought the vampire epidemic couldn't get any bigger in pop culture, comes still another series, this one in graphic novel/comic format, by Jonathan Maberry.  And maybe this will be the end of the line for vampires, because Maberry gets it right.

A gene mutation, the Ice Virus, creates the vampire 'race' to emerge.  Like the television show True Blood, vampires and humans co-exist, are wary of one another, and many (on both sides of the DNA chain) wouldn't mind ridding the world of the other.  When the Speaker of the House, who has been outspoken about dialog and coming to understand one-another, is murdered, one man stands out as the voice of reason.  The vampires keep a close eye on him, and the humans keep him close to the action.

Maberry doesn't waste any time with the story, dropping us straight in to the action, which is already at a fevered pace.  In so many ways this was a breath of fresh air as I seem to have been reading a great many books that spend a lot of time with setting up the story and the characters before getting the reader involved.  Vampires.  Humans.  Conflict.  Maberry understands that we get this very basic premise and moves us in to the story.

The 'good' vampires and the 'bad' humans are sometimes a little stereotypical here.  Vampires that go to church...GAY, bi-racial vampires that go to church ... and humans that just want blood.  It's hard, perhaps, to come up with something new here -- we've seen these same sorts before.  But the characters that are the most interesting are those who are conflicted within themselves.  Those who struggle to remain neutral are the characters who are the most interesting here.

Maberry weaves in a few plot twists along the way.  Most of these are not too unexpected, but it does what it sets out to do which is to change up the story-line.  To throw a curve, not at the reader, but at the story.  All of this works quite well and drags the reader along on this violent, brutal story.

But what works ... the REASON that it works ... is that it is not just another vampire story.  It is a metaphor for our own world.  Our race, religion, and ethnic bigotry are thrown in our face under the guise of supernatural vampirism.  Who can't read this and see Ferguson, Missouri?  Or the ethnic genocides in the Balkans and African nations and the Asian nations? Or ... you get the point.  Maberry is telling OUR story, but because it's bloody and violent, we don't like to see it unless we can pretend it's make-believe.

The art by Alan Robinson is fine.  This is nothing super-outstanding, but it suits the story well.  Characters are uniquely identified (not always true in some of the graphic novels I've read) and panels aren't filled with un-necessary clutter.

This is a vampire graphic novel series that I am interested in reading.

Looking for a good book?  V-Wars is an inspired graphic novel that puts the reader in to the action, leaves the reader wanting to read on, and silently slaps the reader on the back of the head for behaving the way that we do.

I’m a fan of the anthology V-WARS, also by Jonathan Maberry and contributed to by various other authors writing within this greater vampire world, and I knew this graphic novel was coming out so when I saw it was available on NetGalley I nabbed it. While I don’t really like reviewing comics/graphic novels because they’re not really my thing I’m not about to pass up a read like this so take this review for what you will.

CRIMSON QUEEN starts after the whole zero hour moment happens in the book so while I think there’s enough in the comic to give the reader enough backstory to know what’s going on I would recommend reading the book first. It’s far more in-depth and I think it just enriches the comic even more. It’s been a while since I’ve read the book but I settled back into the few characters that bridge the gap eventually when they finally emerged from my memory. Because the book travels down so many alleys within this world it’s kind of nice to focus on one in the graphic novel and I can really delve deeper into the storyline when I’m not being bandied back and forth. That’s not to say I liked the book less because of the alternating viewpoints; the graphic novel just gives me more focus.

I enjoyed the art by Alan Robinson. It was gruesome and dirty without being a mess of drawings as a means of portraying that dirtiness. Every character was crisp and the attention to detail was fantastic. It’s a world similar to what I’d imagined from reading the book so I was able to jump right in without having to adjust to someone else’s view of the same scenario. That helped a lot.

The plot is an interesting one and one that’s pulled right from the book: people adjusting to the Ice Virus, on both sides of the line. There are extremists, people who just want to continue living, whether they’re human or evolved and then there’s the Queen. Not sure what her deal is yet because she’s not on anyone’s side although her heart, obviously, belongs to the vampires. I’m interested in reading more just because of her. What’s her deal? What’s her prerogative? And who’s really in her pocket? I liked the questions she brought up and I like the questions the plot as a whole are throwing at me. It really is a good story and I like how different it is from anything I’ve read. It at once humanized vampires and keeps then horrifying. These are beasts but they’re also people. Maybe? Maybe they’ll tear your throat out and maybe they just want to mow their lawn. It’s a roll of the dice at the moment.

Really, whether written as a book, graphic novel, whatever, I’ll keep reading V-WARS. It’s just too interesting and compelling not to.

Yes. Yes, times a million. I loved this! Imagine a world infected by a millennia-old bacteria. It doesn't kill people. Oh no, nothing that simple. It instead activates parts of their DNA previously lying dormant. DNA that, depending on their racial or ethnic heritage, turns them into a very specific kind of supernatural being. Love stories with vampires? Wait until you meet the inhabitants of Maberry's V-Wars.

A word of warning, although I don't know how you could assume otherwise, this is a very bloody and violent graphic novel. With the world engaged in a war that very few people actually understand, there isn't a chance to breathe while reading this story. The panels are filled with clues. Peppered with violence and questions of morality. It was all I could do to keep my eyes from flitting ahead to the next page. Everything is rendered beautifully, even when there is death involved. My only complaint, and I hope this isn't the case with the finished digital version, is that this ARC had an issue with text. The speech bubbles were fuzzy, and fairly difficult to read.

On to the story line, shall we? Chances are you've realized that this is a story involving a war against the vampires. What isn't readily obvious, and which I fell so deeply for, was the fact that this isn't a black and white delineation. There is no clear line between sides. Innocents aren't spared. There are groups of people on both sides who could be termed "good guys" or "bad guys". It's all very muddled, and it makes reading this that much more fun. As I said before, morality plays a big part in this story.

The four star rating only reflects the formatting which, once again, I'm fairly certain won't be an issue in the finished version. I'd honestly buy this in paperback anyway. Volume 1 of this has taken my breath away, and all I know now is that I want more! Based off the writing and the illustrations, this is a five star read all the way. I'm thrilled to have found a new series to fangirl over.

Fans of The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman will also enjoy this dystopian vampire graphic novel. Robert Kirkman and Jonathan Maberry are actually good friends in real life and their writing styles have some similarity. Yes, this is vampires not zombies, but it is gritty and smart in a market that has been flooded with vampires for many years.

Be prepared for lots of blood, but also a strong social commentary regarding politics and the media. We often believe exactly what the media tells us about something, but the people with the most influence tend to have control over the media and TELL US what to believe. What if the media told us all vampires are bad, but all vampires really weren’t bad? That is the basis of this story and one I found very compelling. Excellent artwork. Strongly recommended for adults and older teens looking for a new graphic novel series.

Having just been watching the book turned television series of The Strain, I could not help but make a little comparison with that series to this comic series. Only in the fact that the vampires in this comic series are just as evil. They are not your "Edwards" from the Twilight series. Which I like my vampires more realistic and gruesome.

The storyline for this series is a good one as well. I like the progression from book to book. Also, the pictures are great. They really tell the story perfectly and just jump off the pages at me. I have not read many graphic comics but I have to say that if all of them are like this series, then I am going to have to check out more. I can't wait to see how the "V" Wars end in the next episode.

I am a Secondary school student in Penarth since 2016 I have been advertising my services as a book reviewer on Facebook, twitter and in the local Penarth book store on Windsor Road as I want to be a news reporter in my future career, I have built up a catalogue of books that I have reviewed on Facebook. (I then place the reviews on the author website choice). I recently got this book from Aa publishing source and they asked me to do a review for him and put it on goodreads. Positives, excellent colour artwork, easy to follow story line about a global pandemic caused by a virus, and the resulting war between humans and Vampires, Excellent captions and text “This is our war, our war, this war, since the ice virus, everybody carries the potential for vampirism, no one is exempt, no one is innocent, were all in hell” this text on page 15 chapter 1, really sums up what the graphic novel is about. Even young girls get transformed into monsters that destroy their families, the USA president get shot whilst trying to create a peace between the Humans and Vampires, which in my opinion is the main starting point of the war. Unlike other Vampire stories, the Vampire in this story also use weapons and guns like the humans do in the conflict. The format of the story follows the path of 1 main character, This book is the journal of Luther Swann and is basically the main character of the book, following his story arch, until his meeting with the Crimson Queen in the final chapter of the book, who wants to use Lurther Swann in her desire to implement cultural evolution so that both species survive The first in a series, and a brilliant book, graphic novel. Negatives, could not really think of any, if I was being picky it would be that you are thrust into the conflict on day 212 of the vampire war, when maybe the first book should have been about the origins the virus in the days before the outbreak of war, but that is just my own opinion. Will certainly be reading more in the series.

I only read a sample of the issue which ran 8 pages out of 28. Just like #0 this was a hard hitting story. The opening page was a knock me on my ass opening (as was the last page of the previous issue). Everything about this comic series (so far) is well worth the price of admission.

Thank you to netgalley and Diamond Book Distributors for allowing me to read an e-copy of this in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed the plot of this graphic novel. The graphic novel centres around a world where everyone carries the gene for vampirism and could, at any time, become a vampire. This was really interesting and the author really shed new light on the vampire theme. I really enjoyed the pacing of the plot, fast paced and gave out information to the reader in a slow and steady fashion. There were a few plot twists that I did not see coming at all and that kept me glued to the comic. I really enjoyed the artwork of the novel. The artwork is not clean angles and refined lines but much more choppy and sketchy. I enjoyed this as it gave a depth to the characters and the world. I also loved the varying appearances of the vampire's, or "bloods" , as they are referred to in this novel. I liked the relationships between the characters in the novel especially Luther's relationship with the v-8. Overall a good graphic novel. It didnt blow me away but I do look forward to the sequels

This collection tells of a virus that turns some people into vampires. This precipitates a war between humans and vampires. The main character, Professor Swann, is embedded with an army force but is convinced that war is not the answer and that the two races can co-exist. The whole tale smacks of one conspiracy theory after another as he interacts with others who either share his beliefs or who would rather fight than negotiate. These include a journalist, Yuki Nitobe, who is determined to report the truth if she can find it.

The artwork is good but a bit crude at times for my taste. There are a lot of flashbacks and these make the whole tale somewhat confusing as it is not clear where one starts or ends. There are some twists which work well and generally it is engaging and entertaining although a bit gory at times in my opinion.

Recommended to lovers of vampire comics.

This was interesting--sort of a more realistic take on the situation that formed the basis for True Blood: vampires exist, they're the result of a virus, and they want their basic human rights. Except for some of the more militant ones, who believe vampires should rule. Also, there's a significant faction among the human population that believes all vampires should be exterminated. Unfortunately, this all leads to a very talky, political comic, where not much really happens, other than lots of arguments back and forth. The author uses this to comment on modern society and our ongoing war on terror and so forth. The artwork is only serviceable, nothing spectacular. I wish there'd been a bit more action (and Jonathan Maberry is very capable of providing that--see his Joe Ledger series or the YA Benny Imura zombie novels). An interesting failure.

I absolutely loved V-Wars Volume 1: Crimson Queen. The story is entertaining and gripping. It's a real page turner that makes you want more as soon as you finish it. I can definitely say that I intend on purchasing the next book in the series. I love the challenges faced by the main character and I loved that the decision between right and wrong, black and white, isn't always clear. Sometimes, the world is gray. Or red, in the case of V-Wars. I highly recommend this to anyone that loves graphic novels, vampire stories, or an interesting read.

(I received this as a Good Reads First Read. The opinions expressed in this review are my own and in no way influenced by the author or publisher).
