PNP still on heightened alert for Black Nazarene feast, papal visit

Although the New Year festivities have ended, the Philippine National Police is not quite letting down its guard, as there are two major religious events ahead this month.

PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor said Thursday the PNP will continue deploying personnel for the Feast of the Black Nazarene and Pope Francis' visit.

"Hanggang first week, second week may Nazareno... Kasunod noon, padating ang ating mahal na Santo Papa," he said in an interview on dzBB radio.

On Jan. 9, devotees of the Black Nazarene are expected to flock to Manila's Quiapo district for activities related to the feast of their patron.

The activities also include an overnight vigil at the Luneta Grandstand on Jan. 8, and the traditional procession back to Quiapo Church.

On the other hand, the papal visit is scheduled from Jan. 15 to 19, with Pope Francis taking part in activities in Manila and Leyte.

"Ang PNP magsimula unang linggo ng December, kami naka-heightened alert," Mayor said. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
