The Fantastic Four Will Not Be Appearing At San Diego Comic-Con 2014

This year's San Diego Comic-Con is going to be jam-packed with all kinds of huge comic book movie news. While nothing has been officially confirmed, fans around the world are expecting to hear big announcements from both Marvel Studios and Warner Bros./DC Comics, whom we expect to confirm new projects and perhaps even reveal a few new casting choices. Unfortunately, there is at least one 2015 superhero flick that we won't be seeing anything from at this year's big expo: Josh Trank's The Fantastic Four.

Speaking with Latino-Review, producer/writer Simon Kinberg confirmed that next year's big Fantastic Four reboot will not have a presence at this year's Comic-Con - despite the fact that 20th Century Fox is hosting a panel this year in the San Diego Convention center's famous Hall H. Asked if fans can expect any kind of footage or big reveal, Kinberg said,

"I can definitively officially tell you that there will not be anything from Fantastic Four at this year’s Comic Con. We are still very much in the middle of shooting and we don’t want to show anything until it’s ready and it’s not ready yet. We want the first stuff that we show from the film to really blow people away, and it will but we have got to wait until it’s ready."

While that idea makes a good amount of sense in theory - why show anything if it's not your best work? - it's still strange that the production didn't actually make any kind of real effort to have something ready for San Diego Comic-Con. Both Captain America: The First Avenger and Guardians of the Galaxy were only 1-2 weeks into production when they had their times in Hall H back in 2010 and 2013, respectively, and yet they made sure to have something prepped for the Comic-Con crowd. The Fantastic Four, meanwhile, has been in production since April - but apparently no big plans were made in advance to have something ready for a San Diego appearance. Instead, Kinberg says that the folks behind the film are right now mostly focused on "perfection."

"When we really step forward we want it to be with our best foot forward. Instead of rushing something together for the Con we’d rather really wait until we have that perfect first image, perfect first sequence and first scene to show people."

Of course, just because The Fantastic Four won't be at San Diego Comic-Con doesn't mean that it won't be potentially making appearances at other big fan events that will be occurring between now and when the film arrives in theaters next summer. Said Kinberg,

"Yes, there is New York [Comic-Con], there’s Wonder Con, there is a lot of other places were we may indeed pop up with a surprise down the road. It just didn’t time out well this year and we are really so focused on making the film here in Baton Rouge and its going great. You have a lot of people that want to do something really special."

The Fantastic Four, which stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell, Toby Kebbell, and Reg E. Cathey, will be in theaters June 19, 2015.
