“Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1” became the second soundtrack for a hit Disney film to top the U.S. album chart last week.
The compilation album, released by Disney’s Hollywood Records imprint as a companion to the hit Marvel superhero pic, climbed two slots to take the pinnacle in its second week with sales of 109,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan data for the week ending Aug. 10. Disney/Buena Vista’s “Frozen,” the year’s sales champ with more than 3.2 million units shifted to date, held the top for 13 weeks earlier this year. It stands at No. 8 this week, with 28,000 sold (down 15%).
Four albums debuted in the top 10. The 51st volume in the hits compilation series “Now That’s What I Call Music!” launched at No. 2 with a 94,000-unit week. The new title includes (of course) Idina Menzel’s “Frozen” smash “Let Go,” plus chartbusters by Iggy Azalea, Sia, 5 Seconds of Summer, Sam Smith and others.
Massachusetts metal unit Godsmack bowed at No. 3 with its sixth studio album “100hp” (Republic), moving 58,000. The band’s last three releases – “The Oracle” (2010), “IV” (2006) and “Faceless” (2003) – all reached No. 1.

Austin alternative rock unit Spoon moved in at No. 4 with “They Want My Soul,” (Loma Vista), which collected first-week sales of 39,000. The set matched the peak of the group’s last release, 2010’s “Transference.”
The top 10’s lone newcomers, U.K. pop band the Vamps, made their entrance at No. 10, as the EP “Somebody to You” (Island) tracked 20,000. The quartet already has an album, “Meet the Vamps,” available overseas, but are being launched in the U.S. via the increasingly popular extended-play format.
Also holding over in the top 10 were Five Seconds of Summer’s self-titled album (No. 5, 36,000 sold, down 35%), Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker’s “Hypnotic Eye” (No. 6, 34,000, off 74%), Eric Clapton & Friends’ “The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale” (No. 7, 29,000, down 52%), and Sam Smith’s “In the Lonely Hour” (No. 9, 27,000, off 10%).
