Then paint it pink - or if it is too big, light it. St Mary's Lighthouse was dramatically coloured bright fuchsia by North Tyneside Council throughout last October in support of charity. This year landmarks across the UK took part in the big light-up to support Breast Cancer Campaign's fashionable fundraiser, Wear It Pink day, which takes place today.

Landmarks that were lit included Chatsworth House, St Michael's Mount, the Oxo Tower, the Eden Project and Belfast Castle.

"By turning pink in support of Breast Cancer Campaign all of these landmark buildings are helping us to remind the nation of the importance of funding breast cancer research," said Danielle Atkinson, head of fundraising.

Wear It Pink day raises more than £2million every year in October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, by asking everyone to wear something pink and make a donation. To donate, text PINK to 70660 and donate £3 to help Breast Cancer Campaign's research.

In recent years, a group of Barratt builders supported the event by donning high-vis pink vests and hats. Pink may no longer be the most fashionable colour for buildings but in the past it was often the colour of choice for older country houses, complementing aged red brick and warming the appearance of homes in the winter.

Could pink make a comeback? The owner of this property in Coreway, east Devon, built in 2008, thinks so.

Indeed it has featured in magazine articles. On the market with Humberts at £650,000, Horizon is so called for its far-reaching views over Sidmouth to the sea at Lyme Bay on the World Heritage coastline known as the Jurassic Coast.

Painted in a colour known locally as Suffolk Pink, Weavers is a charming Grade II listed house among the oldest in the village of Chelsworth.

The pink theme has even been adopted inside, with many rooms furnished and painted pink. “It is fair to suggest that a degree of updating and modernisation is required but the accommodation is extensive, versatile and would suit a range of different lifestyles,” said agent David Burr.

The property has large, established gardens and is priced at £495,000. Located in the unspoilt Brett Valley, Chelsworth is packed full of character, with many period buildings and a great community spirit.
