Katherine Schwarzenegger Opens Up on Parents' Divorce: 'They Did a Great Job Maintaining Our Family Unit'

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver’s daughter Katherine is opening up about her parent’s divorce, praising the former couple for keeping the family together in the wake of their public split.

“My parents were very, very big on making sure that we remained a family unit no matter what happened and they did a really good job at that,” the author, 26, said during her visit to The Talk on Wednesday.

Her parents divorced in 2011 after the former governor of California admitted to fathering a child with the family housekeeper 14 years earlier.

“I asked them for forgiveness,” Arnold Schwarzenegger later said of the ordeal on 60 Minutes. “They cried. It tears your heart out.” Shriver filed for divorce shortly after the revelation.

But Katherine told The Talk that her parents remained committed to children after the split. “They come out together for everything, whether it’s a birthday party or a graduation … just very supportive parents in general,” she explained.

“We’ve remained very very normal and we just have a lot of love for each other. We’re overly obsessed with each other … they did a great job, both my parents …maintaining our family unit.”

As for her half-brother, Joseph Baena, now 18, her father recently told Howard Stern that the difficult situation is working itself out with time.

“He’s terrific and he totally understands the situation,” the actor said. “So, it all has worked out … It’s a very tough situation for him. It’s a very tough situation for my kids, very tough situation for my family. It was tough for everybody. But it has happened and now we have to figure it out, right?”
