PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A large, early-morning disturbance outside Club Viva at 234 Thayer St. ended with a man identified only as "John Doe" being arrested and charged with simple assault, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice and disorderly conduct.

The police report said the man refused to give police his name, and had no I.D. on him.

The police report said officers arriving on the scene just before 2:30 a.m. on Saturday in response to reports of "a large crowd fighting directly in front of Club Viva,'' were confronted by a "belligerent'' man who "continued to shout obscenities'' at them in response to their verbal commands to leave the scene, at one point "stiff arming'' one of the officers and "forcing him back into the wall.''

"After a lengthy struggle the unknown subject was handcuffed and apprehended,'' the police report said. In the cellblock he "continued to be aggressive and uncooperative and refused to Identify himself, shouting profanity, threatening Police, and spitting saliva ... and aggressively kicking the cell door."

The suspect is being held for the next session of 6th District Court.
