Velvet Goldmine

Velvet Goldmine ★★½

"Rock and Roll is a prostitute, it should be tarted up."
- Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers)

Velvet Underpants: Exuberant thrall through the rollercoaster 70's glam rock scene. An homosexual reporter probes the colourful characters that lived the rock and dream, and surrounded British rockstar Brian Slades rise to global fame, while his American friend Curt Wild slipped into the fringes of the music world.

Another movie I'd put off that I really should have braved watching much sooner. Todd Haynes 'Velvet Goldmine' obvious ode to Bowie and Iggy's halcyon days, was doomed to fail the moment Bowie refused to have his music commissioned for the movie. It totally bombed on its brief run in the cinema. But its not all bad it does capture the era very well and of course the period music is fun.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers does great in the lead as gender/genre bender Brian Slade, whose an actor I know very little about other than his fabulous work in 'Tudors'. Outside of slaughtering The Stoogies 'TV Eye' Ewan McGregor does great as Yankie Curt Wild. Christian Bale didn't really do much for me, hes pretty much the Tom Cruise character in 'Interview With A Vampire'. Even worse is Eddie fucking Izzard as the brash manager. Sadly wasn't the biopic it could have been, but its very watchable (shame musicians aren't as interesting these days).

[Personal Reasons For Remembering]
Placebo doing Bolan's '20th Century Boy', in fact the soundtracks surprisingly good featuring Eno, Thom York and Pulp.
