'Surreal’ VR Experience SightLine: The Chair Released

Oculus VR, the company behind the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) has been keeping its Oculus VR Share platform up to date with a range of free experiences recently. Undoubtedly one of the more surreal and impressive titles to release for the portal in recent weeks is a demo SightLine: The Chair from an indie development team led by Tomas Mariancik, which is compatible with both the Oculus Rift’s first and second development kits (DK1 + DK2).

Rift + new silent hill = R.I.P

I got my Oculus Rift DK2 2 weeks ago, and this demo blew me away. I've never experienced the first Oculus Rift before and my idea of what VR would be like was NOTHING in comparison to actually trying VR for the first time. When you strap that headset on, you are literally there in the world. The objects are within reach exactly like how your real desk is outside of VR.

In this demo, when the walls of one of the scene broke off and you are suddenly in space with the Earth rotating below you, asteroid flying passed you, and the only thing preventing you from falling down back to Earth is the chair you're sitting on, I completely lost it(jaw-dropping amazing moment). I had a brief moment of freaking out, because it actually felt like I was thousands of miles above Earth and could literally fall off of the chair.

The next scene puts you under murky green water. These wire like things shoot pass your face and body from every direction. With the DK2, you can look at these wires from all angles, above, below, around, etc. This means dipping your head down, turning it side ways and looking up to see underneath or the backside.

I am completely convinced that VR is the true next leap in a fresh new gaming experience. This is NOTHING like 3D gaming or even the very best 3D movies. It's like night and day in comparison. You see natural depth like you see in real life. Again, nothing like 3D movies. For those who think VR is only good for the first person point of view, I encourage them to someday try Couch Knights, another amazing demo.

This is one of the best tech demos to introduce people to VR with.
My roommate a former vr skeptic said it was the best experience he's had in the last ten years. Another friend of mine nearly ripped the dk2 off his head at the finally of this demo. He apparently was afraid of heights it seemed lol.

That's fine. GT7 would overshadow it anyway at it has open wheel and regular cars.

Should have been spending their time updating Squadrons with better resolution, frame rate, haptics, etc as there isn't a game like that on PS VR 2 yet.

But it's EA. They don't think.

Babadook7351d ago

I agree. It would sell better on PSVR2 right now.

Knushwood Butt351d ago (Edited 351d ago )

A wasted opportunity, but I don't buy EA / Codemasters stuff anyway. Grid Legends just came out on Plus and I haven't touched it. Why would I when I have GT7 and PSVR2?

Abnor_Mal351d ago

Not into F1 racing, but still a missed opportunity.

ApocalypseShadow351d ago

That's where opportunity presents itself that they could offer something else that other developers haven't offered yet. Yeah. There's No Man's Sky. But a space game with a story would be great. Like the old days with Colony Wars.

Abnor_Mal351d ago

Exactly, they could have possibly lured more players just from the inclusion of a vr mode.

I miss Colony wars and G-Police, Low-Fi I hope will scratch that itch when it releases. We also need a vr War/Starhawk game.

Knushwood Butt351d ago

Just watched the trailer of Low-Fi. Most definitely on my radar.

Although I never owned an oculus, I played the demo for this at an electronics store. Pretty impressive in an early goings of VR title.
