Success Academy is living up to its name.
Seven out of the state’s 15 top-scoring schools on math proficiency tests this year were Success Academy charter schools — the same network targeted by Mayor de Blasio earlier this year in a fight over classroom space.
An astounding 93.9 percent of Success students passed the Common Core math exam and 64.5 percent passed the English proficiency test, a significant jump from last year and more than double the pass rate of all public schools citywide.
New York City Charter Center CEO James Merriman called the gains “remarkable” and credited Success’ emphasis on intensive instruction.
Demand for Success slots is so great the network wants to add 14 more schools over the next two years, which would bring its total to 46 schools serving more than 15,000 students.
Other charter networks also reported large gains in math, but smaller ones in English.
The pass rate at KIPP’s 10 charter schools rose almost 12 percentage points in math, from 32.6 to 44.4 percent. But its English pass rates dropped slightly from 21.5 to 21.3 percent.
KIPP New York City superintendent Josh Zoia said he plans to increase instruction time in literacy and guided reading to improve the English scores.
