New Principal at Midland School

Jim Boylan

The Rye City School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. James Boylan as Principal of Midland School, effective July 1, 2014. After a thorough search that involved over one hundred candidates, the Board of Education and Administration have determined that Mr. Boylan will be an excellent fit for the position currently held by Angela Grille, who will retire after the current school year.

Mr. Boylan joins Rye from the Hastings-on-Hudson School District, where he has served as Assistant Principal at Hillside Elementary School since 2011. Prior to this role, Mr. Boylan worked in the Briarcliff Manor School District, where he served as an elementary school teacher while also honing his experience as a teacher leader and administrator. He holds a Master of Education Degree from Bank Street College, a Master of Science Degree from Mercy College, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Clemson University.

In his previous posts, Mr. Boylan has been intensely involved in Common Core implementation, Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) teacher evaluations, the management of state assessments and analysis of results, schedule development, the hiring of teachers and aides, the development of school-wide procedures, and much more. He has also been a leader in integrating technology into the classrooms, securing grants dedicated to this purpose and authoring several SMARTBoard lessons.

In Hastings-on-Hudson, Mr. Boylan served as a member of the District’s Data Inquiry Team and District Social Emotional Learning Committee, and managed Hillside Elementary School’s mentor program while also participating on the school’s New York Common Core Standards team.

“I am extremely excited and humbled at the opportunity to work with such an experienced and devoted group of professionals,” Mr. Boylan expressed. “The Rye City School District is well known for its focus on providing the highest and most effective forms of instruction to ensure all of its students are successful. To have the privilege to work with such a devoted community as the Principal of the Midland School is a dream come true. I share Rye’s vision that children need to become lifelong learners so they are successful members of the global community and enjoy all of the opportunities that a diverse and differentiated education can provide.”

“We are pleased to welcome Mr. Boylan to Rye and are confident that he will make a wonderful member of our administration and the Midland School family,” stated Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Alvarez. “We took this principal search extremely seriously and held numerous focus groups, even one with the children themselves, to obtain various levels of input. We are confident that Mr. Boylan holds all of the outstanding qualities that the students, staff, and parents at Midland want in their next principal.”
