BIOGRAPHY: THE PUBLIC EDITOR
Daniel Okrent
aniel Okrent was named to the newly created position of public editor in October 2003.
The public editor works outside of the reporting and editing structure of The Times and receives and answers questions or comments from readers and the public, principally about articles published in the paper. Additionally,
he publishes periodic commentaries in the paper about The Times's journalistic practices and current journalistic issues in general, to appear when he believes they are warranted.
Mr. Okrent spent more than 25 years in magazine and book publishing. From 1999 to 2001 he was an editor at large at Time Inc., and from 1996 to 1999 he was the companys editor of new media. From 1992 to 1996 he
was managing editor for Life magazine and from 1991 to 1992 he was an assistant managing editor there. From 1984 to 1989 he was founding editor of New England Monthly magazine, twice a winner of the National Magazine
Award for General Excellence. From 1985 to 1989 he was also a columnist for Esquire magazine. From 1978 to 1983 he was a publishing consultant to Texas Monthly, Inc. He was editor in chief of Harcourt Brace Jovanovich
from 1976 to 1977. From 1973 to 1976 he was the editorial director for Grossman Publishers, then a division of Viking Press and from 1969 to 1973 he was an editor with Alfred A. Knopf.
Mr. Okrent was the Hearst Foundation Visiting Fellow in New Media at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 1999 and has been a frequent lecturer at other universities. He is the author of several
books, most recently "Great Fortune: The Epic of Rockefeller Center" (Viking Penguin, 2003). He is also known as a founder of Rotisserie baseball, the forerunner of numerous fantasy sports games.
Mr. Okrent graduated with a B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1969.
