D'Angelo Performs Prince Tribute with Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum on 'Tonight Show'

On Tuesday’s episode of The Tonight Show, host Jimmy Fallon introduced musical guest D’Angelo, who gave an emotional performance of the Purple One’s 1986 hit “Sometimes It Snows in April” with surprise guests Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum, both who make up the Prince cover band, Princess.

Complete with purple background lighting, D’Angelo, dressed in black fedora and white fur vest, played the keys as Rudolph and Lieberum provided background vocals. The R&B singer also changed some lyrics singing, “I often dream of heaven and I know that Prince’s there.”

“Hold on to your teardrops. Me, Maya and D’Angelo sing ‘Sometimes It Snows In April’ on the Tonight Show this evening. I somehow made it through without balling,” Lieberum posted on Facebook along with a purple heart emoji.

The night before, Fallon and Questlove paid homage to Prince by sharing a funny ping pong anecdote. The Roots band member also penned a Rolling Stone tribute.

And on Saturday night, Princess took the stage at the Paramount Theatre for the annual Moontower Comedy and Oddity Festival in Austin, Texas, where the duo paid tribute to Prince’s sudden death with a night of tears, love and rock ‘n’ roll.

That same evening, NBC aired a Saturday Night Live Prince special featuring a video of the legendary musician performing at the comedy series’ 40th anniversary afterparty. The clip also showed the legendary musician dancing and performing alongside Rudolph, who provided backup vocals for the performance. Fallon kicked off the special by donning a purple tie and reflecting on Prince s SNL legacy, which spanned four decades of performances.

Princess previously backed The Roots in a September 2012 episode of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, singing “Darling Nikki.”
