EDISTO ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - An Edisto Island school could face the possibility of closing soon, according to a Charleston County School Constituent board member.

Charles Glover Senior, Chairman of the District 23 Constituent Board, said Wednesday a public meeting will be held May 11 at 6 p.m. at Jane Edwards Elementary School to discuss the future of the school.

Originally scheduled for May 4, Glover said the constituent board wanted to give more time to the public to respond and come up with some solutions.

According to the Charleston County School District website, Jane Edwards is one of four Elementary Schools in the district.

The website states the school has an enrollment of 89 students, and received "average" state ratings in 2014 and 2012, with a "good" rating in 2013.

Glover said CCSD is considering closing the school based upon a lack of funding and low student enrollment.

Emails to CCSD about the possibility of the school closing were not immediately returned.
