POLICE were aware Jimmy Savile had a gay relationship with the mayor of a seaside resort, who allegedly abused boys in his ice cream parlour, it has been claimed.

North Yorkshire Police files has revealed the disgraced broadcaster, who had a home in Scarborough, had an affair with Peter Jaconelli, known in the town as the King of Cornets.

The force, which last year expressed regret at missed opportunities to investigate the pair when they were alive, has previously apologised to the 35 people who came forward with allegations they had been abused by the men.

The Sunday Mirror reported the force had intelligence reports that stated: “Savile had a sexual relationship with Peter Jaconelli.”

It said the police file states that 21-stone Jaconelli enticed young boys into his ice cream parlour by throwing cash at them.

The file added: “Jaconelli would sexually touch the young boys in a scramble for the money.”

Another intelligence report states Savile, who died in 2011, was a “close associate” of “suspected child abuser” Jaconelli.

Jaconelli, who died 16 years ago aged 73, was stripped of his civic honours last year over the child sex abuse allegations.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is shortly expected to release its findings on how the force handled information from a 15-year-old girl in 2002 regarding Savile and how it treated allegations made by a prison inmate about Jaconelli in December 2008 and January 2009.

Jaconelli’s nephew Dennis, 63, told the paper: “Peter Jaconelli is not here to defend himself, but we have to have confidence in what the police are saying – it is shocking and traumatic.

“If he did do anything like this it would be despicable, but it was certainly not obvious to us.”
