Siege: A Thriller Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 2,140 ratings

From the #1 internationally bestselling author of Relentless, Stay Alive, and Ultimatum, a heart-pounding, race-against-time thriller about a carefully orchestrated hostage takeover at a London hotel.

London is under attack. An unknown number of its citizens are dead. Many more lives hang in the balance as a group of highly trained gunmen storm the luxurious Stanhope Hotel on Park Lane, demanding the government meet their requests within five hours—or they will blow up the building and everyone still inside it.

Shots ring out. Some guests panic. Others text their loved ones. A few try to escape. All are united by their desire to live. And at the center of it all is one man who has information so dangerous that it must be kept safe—at any price. Darkness falls. The gunmen become increasingly violent. One question is on everyone’s mind: Will any of them survive the night?

"Kernick generates a potent cocktail of thrills" (
The Guardian) and calls to mind Robert Ludlum and Lee Child in sheer storytelling power and action. With a fast-moving plot and an arsenal of dynamic characters who are at once familiar and full of surprises, Siege will keep you on the edge of your seat from its start to its shocking finish.

When I'm late for an appointment because I find it impossible to walk away from a book with only a couple of chapters left, the author has obviously hooked this reader with a good plot, believable protagonists and antagonists, and plenty of action. Mr. Kernick's writing style flows nicely, and it's refreshing to read about an ex-military hero who is a regular guy, complete with a few warts and foibles. On a side note, I wish Mr. Kernick's anticipation of a true "Arab spring" had come to pass, but, alas, it looks like the Islamic terrorism plot line will be current for an indefinite period if time. Well-done, Mr. Kernick! As soon as I hit the "submit" button, I'll be searching for my next Kernick novel!

    Good. Character.development. Outrageously fast paced with twists and turns aplenty. Kept me going. The only reason why I couldn't give it five stars was the author got the anti terrorism aspects of the Special Air Service wrong. {Sigh}

Under Siege tells the story of a series of attacks in central London, focused primarily on a massive hostage situation at the Stanhope hotel. Author Simon Kernick doesn't spend a lot of time on characters background, or even giving names to most of the "bad guys." The story jumps right in with several short chapters describing what each character is up to, and it was a little hard to keep everyone straight at first. Eventually the stories all merge together and the chapters get a little longer as the action picks up. The action was frantic and the scenes were well written, but the book definitely didn't strike any major emotional chords. If that's what you're looking for, this would be a great choice.

Still a good enough read to justify 3 stars, but not something to rush out and read immediately.

This was a page-turner, meaning it kept me very interested all the way. It was a good story -- although certainly with its share of violence -- after all, a group of "bad guys" take over a building with lots of hostages and they are not nice people! It has a few less than savory passages, but on the whole was entertaining. There was good characterization and I liked the book very well.

This is a breezy, quick summer read-true "junk food" in the best sense of the word. You know the type of book-one that gets stained with ketchup and grease as you read with one hand and eat the processed food you only allow yourself on rare summer days. A fun work of fiction that works perfectly on the beach or the deck, with a big bag of chips and a six pack of beer to wash it down.

Give it a shot-you'll enjoy this one.

I'm now a major Simon Kernick fan! A lot of characters, a complex plot that hinges on numerous sub-plots, multiple locations, extensive and crucial dialog and a very tight timeframe, collectively, sound like a reader's nightmare. And from Kernick's notes at the end of the book (which I very much appreciated) , they were also an author's nightmare. However, he carried everything through with a stellar result. The chaos inherent in the storyline was precisely coordinated, if that makes sense. I soon knew the places, the people, the shock and fear - I couldn't read fast enough. When I finished the book, I was satisfied! Siege is everything a thriller should be.

Nicely managed thriller, characters were well developed. Although the author offered an epilogue of sorts at the end about one of the characters, the outcome for two of the other very important characters was left hanging. It felt like the author had a deadline and didn't have time to finish the book.

This book turn out to be a happy surprise. It's well written and riveting right to the end. I read it in two days because I didn't want to put it down. It's fast paced and filled with action. A really good read.

Very disappointing book, unbelievable story of no interest, medoicre characters with unpleasant political insinuations which is a denial of reality and of the real situation. The last book from this author that I buy. Boring, not worth wasting several hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars 368 pages of holding my breath...it can't be good for me?!?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 25, 2012
I am a huge Kernick fan and love his style of writing. I can only compare reading his books to driving a Ferrari at full speed and no brake pedal in sight! This book was no different for each of the 368 pages. The awful thing about this book is that the world we live in today presents many situations like this one. This situation is where people are held hostage fearing for their lives; while others fight their own war.

From the very beginning of the story we are plunged into the horrific situation that many will find themselves in. You are quickly introduced to quite a lot of characters and in the beginning I wondered why there were so many. However, pretty soon you realise that all these people are going to collide in the most horrific of circumstances.

The short sharp chapters kept me turning the pages until I realised it was past my bedtime and I had demolished over half the book in one sitting! The characters in the book seem to grab at your emotions for one reason or another and there are so many different stories about why people are there you become intrigued to the point of distraction. One character named Scope really caught my eye and I would just love to see him feature in other books, but who knows what My Kernick will bring us next.

There are plot twists and surprises by the bucket load, so you won't be disappointed in that sense. The only un-nerving thing for me is that this is all too much of a reality. Working in any major city on the world you will feel all too easily the reality bursting through the seams of the pages. Simon Kernick has once again released a book that will have you on the edge of your seat and as ever I end up disappointed that I have to wait so long for the next one!
