Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice enjoyed a blockbuster opening this weekend both at home and abroad, taking in an estimated $424.1 million worldwide.
The Zack Snyder-directed DC superhero showdown earned $170.1 million from North America and an additional $254 million from 66 international markets. BvS made $57.3 million alone in China, the second biggest film market in the world.
Domestically, BvS broke The Hunger Games' March opening weekend record of $152.5 million. And should the estimates hold, BvS will also be Warner Bros.' biggest domestic debut of all time, surpassing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 ($169.2 million).
BvS also marks the biggest opening ever for a DC Comics movie, passing The Dark Knight Rises' domestic bow of $160.9 million. It made roughly $54 million than its predecessor Man of Steel did when it opened in 2013. However, it's the fourth-biggest superhero movie opening of all time in North America behind three Marvel movies: The Avengers ($207.4 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million) and Iron Man 3 ($174.1 million). It's a different story globally. BvS had the fourth-highest opening weekend of all time with $424.1 million behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($529 million), Jurassic World ($524.9 million) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 ($483.2 million), but ahead of Marvel's biggest worldwide opening weekends.
Industry pundits widely believe BvS needs to break the $1 billion mark to be considered a success (it's break-even point is reportedly $800 million given production and marketing costs) and for Warners to compete with Marvel Studios, which has three billion-dollar blockbusters in its filmography. While the film's stellar international start is obviously a huge positive, there remains some concern about how BvS will hold up domestically.
Domestic audiences gave BvS a lukewarm "B" CinemaScore, the same exit polls score filmgoers gave Catwoman and Green Lantern. That may spell trouble for the film's run at home, although it should be noted that BvS faces no major competition until The Boss (April 8), The Jungle Book (April 15), and Barbershop: The Next Cut (April 15).Here are this weekend's Top 10 domestic box office estimates via Rentrak:
