Maggie Gyllenhaal suffers a fashion fail as she steps out in drab trench coat inspired playsuit for movie screening

She definitely stands out for her edgy persona and quirky style, but Maggie Gyllenhaal seemed to blend right in with the rest of the crowd on Monday.

Maggie's beige pant jumper, which she paired with a red purse, left something to be desired as she arrived at a screening of Very Good Girls - her mother Naomi Foner's first directorial effort - at the Tribeca Grand Hotel in New York.

The 36-year-old carried two purses and a wardrobe bag, perhaps she was planning to change into something more glamorous later in the evening.

The older sister of Jake Gyllenhaal has been enjoying acclaim for her role in the new BBC TV show, The Honourable Woman, which debuted in the UK at the start of July.

She plays Nessa Stein, an Anglo-Israeli businesswoman who has transformed her father’s arms company into a philanthropic powerhouse in the Middle East.

Speaking to MailOnline in June, she said, 'It’s maybe the fifth time I’ve done an English accent and this is the first time it was truly in my bones,’ said Maggie, whose greatest British friend is Emma Thompson, whom she met when the pair starred together in Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang.

‘Just being around Emma has helped – the accent melts into you. She is a dear friend of mine'

And Maggie, who lives in New York City with her husband Peter Sarsgaard and their two children Ramona, seven, and Gloria, two, is just as taken with the UK.

'Actually, I would like to live in London,’ she said. ‘It’s the place to be if you’re an actor. Maybe we’ll wind up here for a year. Peter is not convinced, he wants to live somewhere like Yosemite.

'Neither of us is satisfied by New York but our daughter goes to an incredible school and when you have them in a great school, you don’t move!’

The Donnie Darko star also revealed that she has changed greatly since becoming a mother and it's helped her to become less judgmental.

She explained: 'Motherhood brings you to your knees in a way that doesn't leave room for you to judge others. It makes you see that there's no ideal - a constant struggle, constantly compromising, but ultimate love.'

Next up for the talented actress will be her Broadway debut in the revival of Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing opposite Ewan McGregor.

Rightly, she feels positive about her career and about growing older in Hollywood.

‘Do you know what I think of? The scene in American Hustle where Amy Adams is stripping,’ she says.

‘She is 39 and looks fantastic, but she also looks like a normal woman.'
