Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson is no stranger to controversy.

And following last night's show, he's found himself at the centre of an alleged racism row after appearing to mock Thai people .

"That is a proud moment - but there's a slope on it," said Clarkson, as a figure walked towards himself and Richard Hammond on a bridge.

Richard Hammond replied, indicating the bridge's surface: "You're right, it's definitely higher on that side."

Following the show, Clarkson tweeted his thanks to viewers - and included another loaded reference, relating to an alcoholic Thai drink.

Here are 10 more of his controversial career moments.

1. In October 2009, Clarkson caused outrage by ridiculing TV bosses for being obsessed with having “black Muslim lesbians” on shows to balance out the number of white heterosexual men.

His comments followed on from the Strictly Come Dancing row over Anton Du Beke branding his partner Laila Rouass a “Paki”.

2. In November 2008, Clarkson made an ill-judged joke about lorry drivers murdering prostitutes during an episode of Top Gear.

Complaining about the constant need to change gear, he said: “Change gear, change gear, change gear, check mirror, murder a prostitute, change gear, change gear, murder.  That’s a lot of effort in a day."

Despite numerous complaints to the BBC and Ofcom, and a call from an MP for him to lose his job, Clarkson gave only a mock apology on the following week’s show.

3. During a press conference in Australia in February 2009, Clarkson branded then Prime Minister Gordon Brown a “one-eyed Scottish idiot".

Most of the complaints about his comments focused on the “Scottish idiot” line, however Clarkson only apologised for his remarks on Brown’s appearance.

4. In July 2010, Clarkson got himself into trouble by making a joke about a woman in a burka wearing a red g-string while discussing dangerous driving conditions on the show.

The joke even upset the often-controversial Lily Allen, who tweeted that the joke was “distasteful”.

5. In the same month, Alastair Campbell revealed on his blog that, in unaired comments, Clarkson had rebuffed claims that he wasn’t very sound on gay rights by replying “Oh yes I am. I demand the right not to be bummed.”

6. A month later, in August, Clarkson once again slipped up by making a jibe about people with disabilities.

The presenter was comparing two Ferrari’s and described the older one as a ‘simpleton’ that should be called the ‘430 Speciale needs’ instead of it’s real name ‘430 Speciale’, which prompted a backlash from the National Autistic Society.

7. In April this year, The BBC was forced to apologise to the Mexican ambassador after Clarkson branded Mexicans “lazy”, “feckless” and “flatulent” in an episode of Top Gear.

Ofcom received 157 complaints about the comments on the BBC2 show, which viewers complained were derogatory, cruel, xenophobic, discriminatory and racist.

9. Later that month, singer George Michael hit back at cruel remarks Clarkson made about him on Top Gear with a “love song”,

George, 48, wrote: “You pig-ugly homophobic t***” on his Twitter page as a message to the TV star.

10. Clarkson gaffed again in August this year, as he was filmed parking in a disabled bay during the filming of Top Gear.

Executive producer Andy Wilman was forced to respond to complaints on the show’s blog, writing: “For those who are cross with us, please direct your anger towards myself and the production team, rather than at Jeremy and James.

“This was our fault, not theirs, and we unreservedly apologise to all the viewers we have upset as a consequence."
