Report: Xavi Hernández to New York City F.C. is a Done Deal

David Ramos

It did seem inevitable, and now it appears to be over. The Xavi Hernández Era is coming to a close at Barcelona, with the legendary captain and midfielder reaching a deal with new Major League Soccer expansion franchise New York City F.C.

The report is the cover of Mundo Deportivo, along with the confirmation that the negotiations with the MLS club advanced well over last weekend, and a deal is imminent, most likely done, and it is expected to be announced on Wednesday.

The rumours of a Xavi departure started to grow with Barça's bad performance at the end of last season. During the World Cup, they grew even more with Spain's depressive showing in the tournament. Xavi and new Barça manager Luis Enrique held a meeting before his trip to Brazil, and a move away from Catalunya seemed very possible after it.

If he indeed leaves for the United States league, Xavi will join one of his closest friends, former Barcelona and Spain striker David Villa, and former Chelsea legend Frank Lampard. New York City FC joins the MLS next season, beginning in March of 2015.

Assuming the news are accurate, this is a sad day. Xavi Hernández is our best and biggest leader. We'll always love and respect what he did for Barcelona. The Ultimate Blaugrana, simply a legend.
