The Moto X has had root for some time, but it was only a temporary solution. So that any time a user rebooted their Moto X, root was gone. And in order to get it back, you had to go ahead and connect it to your PC and gain root access again. Now Moto X users can have an untethered root method. So you can go ahead and reboot your phone anytime without losing root, which is great. This one will work for any variant of the Moto X, including the Verizon one, which is pretty difficult to get the boot loader unlocked on anyways.
This new root method is named TowelPieRoot, and the developer responsible for it is iKrYpToNiTe. Now the reason why it’s called TowelPieRoot is because it’s based off of two of Geohot’s root exploits and root methods. That’s Towelroot and Pieroot. However, the root method does not turn off system write protection. So that if you are planning on installing Xposed framework onto your Moto X, you’ll want to do a soft reboot after installing Xposed, or else you’ll run into issues. Which is unfortunate, but these things happen.
Great to see root for the Moto X, even though I’d probably never root mine because it does everything it needs to do already. But great to see it available now, finally a permanent root solution as well. The Moto X+1 should be being announced pretty soon though, so hopefully that one isn’t too hard to get rooted.
