The first time I really paid attention to in game music was Final Fantasy 7. They had this tack that played during all the sad scenes, It really helped the mood.
Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX, Metal Gear Solid, Vagrant Story, Shadow of the Colossus. A few examples of games were music makes the game even better then they already are
Super Time Force music is especially awesome right now! As for non 8bit music, hard to beat the Halo theme.
