Restaurant Turns Sexist Yelp Comment Into a Fundraiser

Photo: Official Site

A restaurant in Portland has turned an incredibly sexist Yelp review into a reason to start an awesome fundraiser. According to Eater Portland, a Yelper left a "disrespectful 'joke'" as part of their (now deleted) five star review of the place, writing: "My friend and I picked up some hot girls here, but he got his pregnant. But she was Canadian so she went home and got a free abortion so it's all cool now. You can get grilled cheeses here for $5." Owner Mike Bender responded to the post: "5 stars to you…for making an example of how this kind of disrespect towards women is shameful and not at all funny…As a thank you for spotlighting this kind of behavior, all proceeds through August from the sale of EastBurn's Grilled Cheeses will go to the Portland's Women's Crisis Line."

Bender tells The Oregonian that beginning on August 1, sales from the restaurant's $5 grilled cheese will be donated to the organization which supports survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Hopefully it will be less controversial then fellow Portland establishments What's the Scoop?'s fundraiser for Planned Parenthood. The ice cream shop offered a special flavor to raise money for the charity but received threatening calls and a slew of angry messages on social media. See the full Yelp post below:
