Official bootloader unlock codes have been made available for 2014 Moto X handsets on Verizon, paving the way for custom ROMs and other third-party customizations.

By unlocking your handset’s bootloader, you can flash unofficial firmware packages — such as CyanogenMod — and other tweaks that aren’t authorized by Motorola. If you want to get your hands on Android 6.0 early, then, or you just want to change things up, it’s a must.

Until now, however, those with a 2014 Moto X on Verizon had no bootloader unlock, so the stock software that came pre-installed on their device was all that was available. Fortunately, Motorola has finally stepped in to help.

“Just wanted to let you know that we did get the green light to unlock the bootloader on Verizon 2014 Moto X (2nd Gen) devices,” writes Motorola Forums Manager Matt. “Unfortunately, we can’t do this for devices on other carriers.”

To get your bootloader unlock code, visit Motorola’s website via the source link below and follow the instructions. One thing you should be aware of before proceeding, however: Although this is official, it will still void your handset’s warranty.
