Sony’s new Xperia Z5 lineup is its first to include fingerprint scanners, but the Japanese company has decided to remove them before bringing the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact to the U.S.

Due to unspecific “business reasons,” the Xperia Z5 devices that Sony will launch in the U.S. on February 7 will not have fingerprint scanners embedded in their sides like the originals, Sony has confirmed to The Verge. However, they will be identical in every other way.

It makes no sense to us why Sony has decided to remove an important feature for a key market. The company has been trying for years to build up its smartphone business in the U.S., so denying U.S. customers of a big feature in its best smartphone to date just seems baffling.

Sony has now given rival smartphones like Samsung’s latest Galaxies, Google’s new Nexuses, the iPhone 6s, and many more an advantage over the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact — which the U.S. has had to wait five months for.
