"HAWKs' 2014 Armies-For-Kids Project a Success!" Topic

This year's Armies-For-Kids project was successfully concluded at last weekend's Historicon convention with the awarding of pairs of opposing, painted, 28mm Napoleonic Amries, terrain and other gaming aids to 6 lucky kids after completion of a specially designated kids' game on Saturday at the con, GM'd be HAWKs member Eric Schlegel. We also handed out two complete pairs of 15mm Seven Years War Armies and terrain, left over from our 2012 Armies for Kids effort, to two lucky kids who took part in another kids' game we ran during the con.

Next year we are planning to be putting together 40mm ACW skirmish forces for our Armies-For-Kids project, based on a generous donation of figures from Maynard Creel. So, if anyone has any 40mm ACW figures, or suitable terrain they'd like to donate, please PM me or contact me at cnjpalmer(at)aol(dot)com

Yes, we accept cash, but I'm afraid we don't have any fancy online way to do it, unless you feel comfortable sending it to my personal Paypal account. (I assure you I am trustworthy) If anyone is interested in sending a check made out to "The HAWKs" you can PM me or email me at cnjpalmer (at) aol (dot) com and I will give you my address that you can senda check (or cash) to, and I promise it will go towards the Kids project. Likewise, if you want my Paypal account info, I can send that as well.

Since next year's Armies for Kids project will be 40mm ACW skirmish armies and terrain (based on a genrous donation of figures from Maynard Creel), a more direct way to donate if anyone would like to, is to order any ammount of 40mm ACW figures (preferable Confederates or Mounted Officers) and have them sent directly to me or one of the other HAWKs. That way you know your money will be going directly to the figures for the kids.

How did the game itself go? Did the kids catch on quickly enough to really keep it moving?

It was an honor to participate. If someone had done something like this when I was a kid…

Unfortunately I was not able to be there for the actual game, but I heard it went really well,. The "Milk and Cookies" rules we use are very kid friendly and kids usually are very quick to pick them up.

My son played a while back and really appreciated the opportunity. The thing he liked most was the history quiz they gave during the game. Nice touch that.

The rules we use are Milk and Cookies rules from a book called Big Battles for Little Hands: A Wargaming Sourcebook for Kids. The kids all caught on quickly to the game. They all stayed engaged in the two-hour game, which is pretty good for a bunch of kids under ten. A couple of the parents stuck around to help, but in general Eric does a very nice job keeping the kids engaged.

The HAWKs usually have our own room at the HMGS East conventions. (All our games are in one room, but sometimes other people run games in the room if we haven't scheduled all the tables.) We usually devote one table on Saturday for kids games. This year nearly every one of our kids games was full. It is really neat to see so many young, budding games having a good time in our games.
