Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch, to give him his full name, has announced his engagement to theatre director Sophie Hunter in the most brilliantly British way - via an announcement in The Times newspaper.

1. Although his devoted fans call themselves "Cumberbitches", he's not a fan of the term saying, "It sets feminism back so many notches". He would prefer the name, "Cumberpeople".

3. Despite being one of the hottest actors on the planet he admits he gets "very nervous and star-struck" when he meets famous people.

4. Benedict almost didn't become an actor. He toyed with the idea of training to become a lawyer and says he'd like to be a neurosurgeon.

5. Despite his many acting accolades, Benedict says his greatest disappointment is "not being a dad by the age of 32". He believes that having children would be his greatest achievement.

6. He learned how to play the violin in a week.

7. After gaining impressive GCSE results, he didn't do so well at A Level after discovering, "Girls, pot and all sorts of other things".

8. His favourite movie is Ghostbusters. Benedict is also a big fan of American drama, citing The Wire, The West Wing and Mad Men as his top TV shows. 

9. He lost weight for his role as Sherlock Holmes. He also dyed his hair black for the role. His natural hair colour is actually auburn.

10. He cites his most embarrassing moment as one from his childhood, "When I was six, I got stung by a wasp in a Greek market. A widow pulled down my pants, held me upside down and rubbed an onion on my bum.”
